If the instrument is left in "raw brass" one needs to keep in mind that the elements as well as the acid from the player's own hands will attack the instrument and greatly decrease the life expectancy of your brass instrument.

Also, the residue from this oxidation process can be absorbed into the players system and may not be very healthy at all. Some players have discovered that they are actually allergic to this brass oxidation residue.

Maybe some of us should wear surgical gloves when playing the sax. You know, practice safe sax.

Yeah, or put really small condoms on our fingers. Don't wanna catch any STD's (Sax-Touching Diseases)

In 1960-got brass poisening from my Mark VI rt thumb rest! :? Still have the scar. If thumb rest is bare brass-cover it with a piece of plastic tubing.

My MKVII alto is bare brass and my Zephyr tenor has almost no lacquer left on it, but I've never noticed any problems.

What are the symptoms of brass poisoning or allergy??

The brass poisening symptoms I had included-mottled red streaks on inside of right arm-pain in thumb etc. Doctors at first suspected spider bite/snake bite-were not familer with Mark VI brass thumbhook problem! (I was in Army at time so had excellent medical facility) Brass has zinc and lead in it-neither are good when introduced into blood! Started with a blister on thumb from playing 8 hours+ a day!

Brass isn't supposed to have lead in it, just copper and zinc, in varying amounts; probably neither of which is good for you in the form of a sax.
