Hello I'm Sabrina, I write from Italy and I've been played the Tenor sax for a year! I love so much the Tenor sax, mine in particular, it's my first love, I always say we're in love!!! :) I'm so curious to know other girls and ladies who love and play the Tenor sax! Is there anyone? In Italy tenor sax is seen as a "male" instrument, there aren't a lot of girls playing it...so It would be cool to know some of you girls and share our passion for the Tenor sax!!! :) If anyone of you would like to e-mail me that's my adresse: tenor_saxophone@virgilio.it
...how many girls playing the tenor sax are here?
Bye bye
Sabrina
My daughter is 10 and has been playing tenor sax for 6 months. She plays a Keilwerth SX-90. I am her Dad that taught her. She likes the deeper pitch of the tenor probably because she is also a Cellist. She likes how the tenor in concert band sometimes plays w/ the altos but other times plays w/ the trombones and baritone horns.

Ive been playing sax for 7 years, and started on alto, but switched to tenor when my teacher needed a tenor player in one of her bands. As soon as i picked up the tenor i knew it was the instrument for me. I love the sound sooo much and can't get enough of it. I've been playing tenor now for 3 years, and i am the ONLY girl in my school who plays it. There are plenty of girls who play alto, but i guess like you said, tenor is looked at as more of an instrument for guys.

I've played sax for 3 years. I started with Alto because there were 2 saxes in our local music shop - 1 alto and 1 tenor and the alto was cheaper..But then a year later i switched to tenor (altho..i kept my alto too). I love tenor..it's such a wicked instrument...feels a lot more powerful than alto
I'm in the UK btw..

Here's a Dutch woman who plays Alto fairly well. Her father, Hans Dulfer is not too bad either.

So did I, but I had the good taste (tongue-in-cheek emoticon) to let it pass.
Actually, uh, and that you never know if her last name is Bonannno, Gambino or Luciano. :yikes!:

...however, she plays alto, and that was not the question
VIRGINIA MAYHEW (http://www.virginiamayhew.com/) is the kickingest female tenor player that I have ever seen. Got to meet her a few years back at the Stanford Jazz Workshop.

I'm not a lady, so I don't count. But I do know quite some ladies playing tenor. So my macho-part liked to go to baritone. And now I find out tons of girls play baritone. Luckily I don't know too many of them playing soprano :D

One of the tenor players in my first big band, about 30 years ago, was Erica Lindsay (http://www.myspace.com/ericalindsaymusic), a summer student at Berklee from Germany. She had a wonderful concept back then.

Hey! Have you guys forgotten about me? I play tenor. Allora tenor and Chicago Jazz alto. I'm gonna go and sulk now! Better yet, I'll rip off some jazz tunes. By the way, I am a female. Saintsday knows because we jam together.

We were playing at the same club one night, though on different floors, and after our show was over I went down to the pub to check her out. She was on keyboards only that night and had tenor man Ron Holloway with her. I caught her eye and she waved me over and had me and our trumpet player sit in with her and Ron for the rest of the night . It was a blast. She is so much fun to play with. I recall one number, where I was pretty darn proud of the solo I had taken, and then was thoroughly schooled by Ron. Probably should have packed it in at that point, but I think the draft beer was still on the house so I struggled on. Great lady, great performer, and nice as all hell.

And for jazz, I have to mention Anat Cohen (http://www.anatcohen.com), who is an awesome clarinet and tenor sax player.
She recently played locally at the annual Jazz Festival (http://www.cotajazz.org/), in Delaware Water Gap, PA and I think she is based in NYC.

I unfortunately had to leave before Anat played, but I heard that she absolutely blew the audience away.

Meilana, your Myspace clips sound great. Rock and roll. Great sound, great arrangements too. Good things going on. I'll listen for more.
How's life in Brooklyn? I'm slowly planning my escape from the swirling vortex of doom that is Texas, and Brooklyn's high on the list of destinations...
