Hello all,

I've noticed a bit of interest in Borgani saxophones on the site, so thought I would contribute my experience in my first posting.

I have just purchased a Borgani Jubilee tenor in the vintage (unlaquered brass) finish, having previously played a Selmer Series III. The Selmer played really well but the sound I always aspired to was a bit less contemporary and more towards a SBA tone - hard to describe in words but a mellow tone.

The Borgani married to an Otto Link STM immediately produced the goods; warm and with a real depth of tone. I tried the pearlised silver Borgani too, again a really nice tone and popular with many players, but not quite so 'vintage'.

Now... I wouldn't want to start a war of words on whether a Borgani is better than a new Selmer, an old Selmer, a Yani, or whatever. We each hear it our own way I feel and let's just be thankful that there are so many good saxes to choose from.

However, I just wanted to say that I would wholly recommend seeking out the Borgani's, particularly the Vintage Jubilee, if like me you are looking for a less contemporary sound but with modern keywork.

Take care,

Dogday

Welcome! I, too, traveled the path via a Serie III and prefer the vintage vibe of the Borg' tenors.

Check the "View more emoticons" option to find the Borg(ani).

Cheers!

I bought a Borgani soprano, combined with a Selmer soloist.........it beats my 1925 Martin and 1923 gold plated Buescher TT.

It might be worth considering which finish is easier to maintain in your climate. I would think that unprotected brass could get quite green and nasty in the salt air near the ocean - that's just based on my years of polishing brass in the navy. Does the "vintage finish" have a light clear coat of lacquer or is it naked?

I believe that the finish is totally unlaquered. It certainly shows hand marks very easily and I understand this is intentional to speed up the process whereby it will darken and look 'aged'. I agree with Dr G's comments about the potential effect of salt air on unlaquered brass... I shall keep you posted on how it copes with our damp British climate! :?

DOGDAY- Where did you purchase your Borgani and how did the transaction go? I'm still pretty hooked on my MK VI but I'm always willing to try other horns. Thanks.

P.S.- Most of my family still lives in England----my sister and brother in-law are currently living in Bath!

Where did you purchase your Borgani and how did the transaction go?

I bought mine from Allegro in Oxford www.saxophoneheaven.com which I think is the exclusive UK outlet for Borgani. The website is worth looking at as it has a current stock list and pictures of some of the Borgani models.

The transaction was fine... I went along and explained that I was looking for a less contemporary sound and the owner, Roger Baycock, was really knowledgeable and helpful in letting me try various sax, mouthpiece and reed combinations until we found the sound I was looking for. We did a trade on my Series III and that was it. Very easy indeed.

You have relatives in Bath? Let me do my bit for our tourist industry and encourage anyone visting the UK to come to Bath, it's a beautiful city http://www.cityofbath.co.uk/sign/index.html
