I posted this on the Yamaha thread, but maybe it will get more attention here.:)
I have an 875 laquer soprano, and 875 exs alto that I loved so much that I bought an 875 exs tenor. The soprano and alto are incredible.8-) But the silver plated tenor sounds really 'stuffy' in the middle range, around 'C'. The upper register is great, and so is the lower register. The middle range sounds soft. I use a Selmer C* with a Vandoren blue box reed #3, and a BG Standard lig. I have a similar setup for my silver plated alto...which sounds incredible!
Is it just me, or should I have bought the 82z?:?
Am I using the wrong mouthpiece/reed/lig combo? I am mainly playing classical, pop, and Christian music. This is my first tenor.:D Thanks.

I found the YTS-875 (gold lac) was very free-blowing and had a much bigger and grittier sound in comparison to the 875B (black lac) for some reason, though I don't have any problems with the middle register.

Maybe try a C** or D tenor mouthpiece to see if this makes any difference.

My 875 does not sound stuffy, and is in tune.

Could be a venting/key heights issue. Perhaps the hey height on the G key cup is too low, not allowing proper venting, I can't say for certain without seeing it though.

Thanks for the replies. It's probably just me. I'll found out next week when I take it in for my first tenor sax lesson. The guy I'll be studying with knows his stuff, since he played sax for many years for the Navy Band.8-)

Since I've tried several mouthpiece/reed/lig combos, the problem has been solved.:D I get an excellent tone now with:
1. Mouthpiece: Eugene Rousseau New Classic NC5
2. Reed: Vandoren 2 1/2 V16
3. Ligature: BG Super Revelation

Works for me...nice!!!!!!!!!8-) 8-) 8-)
