I purchased an Amati ATS32 Tenor saxophone (Black Lacquer) last Thursday with Woodwind/Brasswind. Has anyone played one of these horns before? I am mainly an alto player (Selmer AS300) but have been wanting to get a tenor for a while now. I was on a budget so I decided to try an Amati. If it doesn't play to my liking, I do have 45 days to send it back for a refund or store credit. I don't do a lot of playing, just mainly church solos and practicing when I can. I'm wanting to join a community jazz band this fall, but we'll see how that goes. Any input would be great.

Amati. They are a reputable european built brand. Go do some homework.
DSanto, Community band is a great idea, go for it! I had a Student Amati Alto that was OK. The left hand pinky cluster had the "german" style linkage to the bell keys for want of a better description, but nothing wrong with that as you will get used to it, its just in a different position, closer to the body. Good luck. Let us know what you think.

Amati are a chech republic horn, possibly better then most asian horns but at least you have 45 days to make up your mind.

Well, it looks like they were out of stock on the Amati. When Woodwind and Brasswind went to pull the horn for shipment, there wern't any left. This was after I was told that there was one left last Thursday. I will talk to the rep tomorrow to see if I'm able to get one or not. In the meantime, I have picked a couple of alternatives in case they don't get anymore in. I'm looking at either the Keilworth ST90, an Amati Series 33, or a Jupiter 787GL Deluxe Series. What do you guys think?

Appears the black lacquer version of the ATS33 is in stock, for just a little more. You might also consider the B&S-made Allora lacquer tenors, which would be a few hundred above (though I'm not exactly certain those are identical to the top-line B&S models or not......).

I ended up getting the ATS33 series Tenor in black lacquer. It will be delivered tomorrow and I will try it out in the evening. I will let you know how it does.

I know that the early Alloras (including the sandblast model) are B&S made, and those are the ones I meant. I too think they are good deals, but my comment was that I'm not sure if the *lacquered* models (the 602) are identical to the top-line B&S models (Medusa, sandblast Allora, CJS, etc.). I had one in on trial back late 2005; it was not as heavy as the CJS version I have now. The new Allora models (679??) are by many accounts made by Amati. I haven't seen any feedback here on their qualities yet. Perhaps they are identical to the ATS33? Amati has an interesting tenor model with nickel-silver neck and bell, but my understanding is it's not available in the US, yet.

Well, I tried out the Amati tenor last night and was pretty pleased with the intonation. It was exactly what I was looking for because I don't play that much except for every few weeks in church and I may join a jazz ensemble starting in the fall. The horn was pretty comfortable to hold even though after a while it was a little rough on my neck because I'm used to holding an alto. The black lacquer looks pretty sharp too.

Congrats DSanto, I've always had luck with the Amati horns, even the old student ones. Lots of people have a different opinion, but I've played several (altos) and they've always had very good intonation and a decent tone. Have fun!

Jupiter 787s play well UNTIL...you put it in a Ritter Gig bag and knock it around a bit. I got mine for £300 (about $570) on Ebay and it's served me pretty well, altho I'll be taking it out of that ritter gigbag and putting it into a decent case very soon.
Saying that..I've never played an Amati or a Keilwerth

I purchased an Amati 62 for the son of a friend of mine. Took it to Volkwein Music to get it set up. When I picked it up Jim Germann said that it was a decent horn for its price range. He said the quality of the metal was very good compared to most horns of the same range.
I have played the horn and I have to say it is pretty good.
Just my two cents concerning Amati horns.

Hi,
I played Amati ATS-62 for several years during my studies. It's a solid horn for a student or semi-professional. The horn is well build. Intonation and feel is ok. Sound, of course cannot be comepared to professional horns, but the horn itself is worthy that money. I heard that quality has increased in last years and some higher priced models (those with silver or copper neck and bell) are exceptionally good. I'd be interested if anyone already played these guys...

My black laquer ATS32 lasted 3 years before the keys mysteriously mis-alligned (upper stack wouldn't move!). I straightened the keys, and now they won't seal (need to take it in). When it was working though, it had a huge, almost Keithwerth type sound. Bore is large, and intonation is good (bore size took some getting used to). My King is replacing the Amati (even if it isn't as pretty, nor keyed to High F#).

i knew i was on a good deal and it was just to make a business (my sax is a selmer super action 80 serie2 and i kept my old mark7) but i've just took my mouthpiece and blowed a few minutes ...i was on my ***! pretty good sound, good fingering...i'm going to keep it for the moment! :) hope to be helpfull!

My first horn was an Amati Tenor and it has been with me these last 35 years, because I love the way it sounds with the Meyer mouthpiece I bought for it around 30 years ago. I've been playing a Yani T9937 past several years and "retired" old faithful, but I suggest you try different mouthpieces and you will see what difference it makes. I don't see myself ever getting rid of my Amati.
