Does anyone know of any good jazz jam sessions that are around the Seattle area (minors must be permitted)?

I'm already jamming with the Clarence "Bash" Robinson Sextet at Tula's (once a month is not enough). I would like it to be maybe once or twice a week, and it needs to be more on the bebop side (not so much fusion). And remember, the club needs to allow minors! (I'm 16, 17 in two months)

Thanks.

What is the legal age to go in a bar there?
In Monreal you can get in at any age as long as you don't drink! I am 18 and attend McGill University, been going to Jazz clubs for quite a few years. In Toronto they changed the laws and you can not get into a bar if there is smoking and you are under 19, but if you are performing you get a pass.I jammed at the REx last week! I have been in New Orleams (can"t get in if they have slots/gambling and you are under 21 but other then that no problem & Chicago I never had any problems getting into any bars , went to the House of Blues when I was 14teen. I played in a bar (Upstairs) in Montreal on my 18th birthday, the bar tender sh@t cause they payed the band with beer, not my first gig there! You got to push the envelope!
Gotta blow.

I believe it's 21.
Though a lot of jazz clubs have areas that are away from the bar (like Tula's) where minors can sit.

Check to see if you can get in if they card you? They do that at a lot of dance clubs here where there is drinking. That way you are identified as underage and cannot be served booze. Come to think of it I started to get in to the bars when I was 12 but I had to be with my Dad. Check to see if you can get in with an adult?

This town is so tight that if your grandfather was in a club and didn't have his ID, the club could lose their liquor license. Seriously. Those Puritanical pricks at the Washington State Liquor Control Board are way out of control, IMO. My father, who's in his 70's, gets carded in this town. Even at clubs where I'm a regular -- hell, at one club where I've played in a band with the doorman -- I get carded just to make sure I have it on me.

Bluenote, there used to be a Minor Performer Permit through the WSLCB, it was a form you had to fill out and (I believe) have notarized. It allowed you in the club while you were performing, but you had to stay either outside or in an area where alcohol was not allowed (backstage or somewhere designated by the club) when you weren't playing. You needed a new permit for every date. Contact the WSLCB and find out if they still have a workaround for clubs that don't have designated minor areas. And then let me know; I'll meet you someplace and we'll jam.

Thanks, Joey.

I went down to Tula's a week ago to play with David Marriot's Quartet as a guest, but this was the first time the club kicked me out at 10pm. Supposedly, at one of the late night jam sessions, the board came in and slammed the owners for having minors in the club after 10pm. Now they are enforcing it more. I used to go to their jams and hang until like 12:30. The guy who gave me the boot said that it becomes a full bar at 10pm, so even if my mom or dad were there, it wouldn't matter.

Yeah, and we should jam sometime.

I used to live in Washington and the liquor laws are very absurd. You can't even go in a bar with your parents. Maybe you should start your own jam session.

Reuel Lubag, local pianist, holds a jam session on Monday and Wednesday nights at Seattle Pacific Univ., over on the north side of Queen Anne hill. He's a part-time instructor over there and the session is usually in his office, although occasionally it's in a classroom next door.

The Monday session is supposed to be for advanced and pro-level players, and Wednesdays are for beginners. He usually starts at 9 PM and goes until 11 or so.

You should drop in and check it out. If you want to play, bring tunes, lead sheets, etc. Jay Thomas has been known to drop in every once in awhile, which is kind of like having Michael Jordan show up at your pickup basketball game in the driveway.
