Hi all,
Would you be open to the idea of a windcontrollers sub-forum?
I guess this topic is covered under Electronic Equipment, and there are not that many posts about it, but it could provide a little more organization and maybe inspire one to post if they saw a windcontrollers area.
When I'm not imbibing Wild Turkey;) , I can be quite knowledgeable about windcontroller topics like WX, EWI, Synthophone, playing computers & synths, hardware & software, amplification, and general tips & tricks.
There does seem to be a growing interest in windcontrollers.
Whattya think?
Thanks for your votes & comments,

I'm there
I'd be there, too.
robo, I'd recommend either PM'ing Harri and the Mods and/or posting that you'd be willing to Moderate that section. It might help with Harri deciding to have an area like that.

We see questions coming up at times. It may inspire me to get My WX5 and VL70 off my top shelf in the closet and do something with it.

Erik,
Thanks for the comments!
Well, you did it! I got the thing out of the closet and put a track down to Greg Fiske's new tune "Small Talk". I'll try to get it posted to my site tomorrow, if possible, and post a link when it's up.
I visited your site and the stuff you do is VERY impressive! I bookmarked it so I can go back and spend more time.
Best regards,
Glen

Thanks Glen, I'm glad you like. I have a lot of fun recording windcontrollers.

Yeah, it gets a little technical over there...bunch of rocket scientists ;)
Feel free to post here in Electronic Equipment if you need any help. I'll try to explain in a way that is easier for us saxophonists to understand.
I just posted a link to Mike Philips playing EWI4000 in Electronic Equipment.
enjoy!

Sweeet. I always admire windsynthesists who can emulate guitar.
I've tried a few times and it comes out all spastic. Hmmm... I wonder if it's because I don't play guitar. :?
You seem to get the concept of plucking strings very well. Do you play guitar? Which patch did you use?
My only constructive comment would be the bass & drums could be a just a hair louder in the mix. I don't know "Small Talk". Nice head. I'm inspired to go learn it now.
Thanks for sharing,

Thanks for the rather strong compliments!
No, I've never played guitar but I've always liked that patch. (WX J Gtr) I've always enjoyed good jazz guitar and perhaps just listening has helped.
When I first got my WX5 a couple of years ago I couldn't play it worth beans trying to tongue it like a sax. I read at Bob Norton's site (http://www.nortonmusic.com/wx5.html#top) about tonging from behind your teeth off the top of the mouth. Once I went to that technique for wind synth it became much easier for me. I then opened up Parker's Omnibook and began playing a bunch of stuff out of it. It was a hoot!
"Small Talk" is a new tune just written by a fellow SOTW member Greg Fiske this month. He's posted a backing (the one I used) and the chart in Bb at his site. Here's the link: http://www.modernsax.com/saxonthewebrecordings.htm
I'm sure he'd like to hear other versions.

Since I don't really know you yet, I'm just tryin' to be encouraging. Also, I think you have a succcessful guitar emulation there. It's sounds like a guitar to me. And, since I've had no luck in guitar emulations I'm less critical. Try some winds and I'll dig a little deeper
I was just wondering, should we move this discussion to the Electronic Equipment area?
I don't want to break any SOTW rules, and technically this thread is about the possiblity of a windcontrollers sub-forum.
Whattya think?

I'd like to see the mods move it to the new "Windcontroller" sub forum............................................. ....yeah....that's it! :)
I'm glad I got encuouraged to get the wind synth out. Seeing others, such as Dean, getting in the spirit of wind synthisis may push me to do a little more with it. I bet there are others out there like me who have had them packed away for some time. Get them out!
It's a piece of equipment I can play even after the kids are asleep. Time for much practice has been at a premium lately and this opens another avenue.
We'll have to start a song of the month in the "windcontroller" section.....yeah..........that's the ticket.

Looks like the votes are not tipping the scales. From what I understand in the topic request rules the requirement for a new sub-forum would be at least 10 above in a weeks time.
That's OK. I appreciate the rules. This is the "Sax" on the Web Forum afterall.
I did some researching in the archives and there's really not much traffic in this area.
The Electronic Equipment area is perfectly fine to keep posting about windcontroller subjects. No sense adding even more categories if they are not needed. And "needed" is what it's all about.
Thanks again for your votes & replies. It's really inspiring to interact with fellow sax/windsynthsists.
On a final note, I'd like to point out that a new web-based forum has just been created by windcontroller specialist Matt Traum from Patchman Music.
Windcontroller Forum (http://www.patchmanmusic.com/forum/) Check it out for more detailed info.
Please don't let this stop you from posting here about windcontrollers. Maybe we could inspire other saxists :D

Nah. It's more like a) there has to be a majority and/or b) Harri has to be around and say "yes" to creating a new area. He just probably hasn't cast his all-seeing eye in this direction. fnord
Anyhow, did you e-mail him, as I mentioned above?

Hi saxpics,
Actually, I PM'd him here. I felt a little weird about it. Because technically I'm still a new guy with only 60 posts. And, I could understand him not wanting to give moderator privileges to someone he hardly knows. I could be some twisted evil maniac:twisted: for all he knows ;) I can assure everybody that I'm not, and hope that time and good posting will earn me some brownie points.
I also think that in time more saxists will be interested, and then there will be a need for the forum to grow.
Thanks for your support saxpics. It's very much appreciated.:)

No problem. I used to play a WX-11 and had waaaay too much electronica at one time (D50, U110, D5, FB01 -- all connected to a $7000 Macintosh SE30. My current computer is over 100x faster and 10x cheaper, but I have none of the electronica). I even once taught a class at my college in electronic music -- primarily because I had better hardware than they did.
I'm a former admin on this forum, so I have a general idea of how it works -- and if you haven't been contacted in any way, that means that Harri hasn't gotten to you yet. Post count is not terribly a problem. References help, as does the content of your posts. You don't have to be a Grand Old One.
"Moderator" doesn't necessarily have to be your user privileges. The idea is that by volunteering, you show that you're dedicated to the area and you want to help it grow -- and by doing so, you might convince Harri to create the subforum.
Heck, there are 26 pages of posts in the "Electronic" forum and I was easily able to find 20 threads regarding EWI's. IMO, that's enough for a new subforum, but it's just my opinion. You need someone else's to make it happen :).
