Hi there!

Just got a Ref54 alto and bought a Jody Jazz Classic 6 - absolutely brilliant, just the sound I wanted, and can have fun with the spoiler as well. w/o spoiler it sounds very sultry, buttery, cool, mellow, to my ears, especially with Rico JS reeds. With spoiler and V16's it is a little brighter and more percussive, but retains the above characteristics.

High recommendation of both!

I'm a Ref54 tenor player and just aquired a JJ HR 7; great alternative to the pieces I have. Just played a gig w/ it last night cause I wanted a tad more edge than my STM; it was perfect. Still round & nice but edgy.

I just put a down payment on my Ref54, because I was told that the price will go up later this month about $200, due to currency fluctuations. This was, I was able to get a good discount (a little better discount than at the music store where I take lessons) and secure the pricing at the current rate. I will get mine next month, and I'm already psyched. I feel like I want to take it to a night club and go at it, even though I'm not that good yet.

Anyway, so Jody Jazz mouthpieces are THAT good? I play a YAS-23, with a Meyer 5, and it does not sound much like a beginner sound anymore. My teacher suggested that I try a Vandoren Java #3 with my mouthpiece. I've been using a Vandoren #2 size. Let's see how this works. I will keep the JJ Classic 6 in mind. Next time I go to a music shop, I will bring my horn and ask for a try out.

Thanks.

P.S. When I pick up my new horn next month, I will bring my teacher with me so he can play it and suggest any fixing up with keys or anything.

Dear Manny3

I have enjoyed Java reeds but prefer V16's. Currently playing Selmer Super Session E mpc with V16's but have been inspired by posts to get my Jody back out. My teacher told me to stop chopping and changing so I've focussed on the Selmer for a while. Now going to give the Jody a fair crack of the whip! Reality is both are great but Selmer not that appealing to start. However it is much fatter, and helped my change of embouchure having mainly played soprano up 'til then.

Just about to play the Jody so will let you know!

Given the Jody a good blast today! Sounds much brighter than the Selmer and is physically much thinner which for me meant some squeaks first time - something that is rare for the Selmer as I don't have to reduce the size of my embouchure - its a real mouthful!

Okay. Thanks for the advice. I will go easy on my Ref54 when I get it, but I was considering having the staff loosen the keys a little. It's a great horn, but I like the loosness of the Cannonball and Yamaha. Will that do any harm to my sax?

Hi there!

Been playing the JJ Classic 6 with Marca Jazz 2.5 reeds. I realise that the JJ is incredibly easy to blow and after the Selmer have to reduce how much effort I put in. Once having done that the sound is again quite beautiful - its just that I don't really have to worry about breathing or air flow, so completely non - fatigueing!

Very happy with both, in reality!
