Hey folks, over the years I've developed the bad habit of typing out full sentences, using periods, commas, quotation marks, etc. Any thoughts on having a section where people can post SOTW abbreviations. Example; gas, amp, etc. Being a SOTW newbie,I'm not real clear on a lot of these.Something like this would help me feel more like a part of the group, and less of a newbie idiot. Thanks, Indiana.

Good idea!
Good luck! :) That's a big job.

I'll start you off though, and maybe others will add to this?

GAS: Acronym for Gear Acquisition Syndrome. The unavoidable compulsion to spend money one doesn't have, on gear one doesn't need, in the misguided belief that doing so will make one a better player.

this leads to;

The 48 hour rule: If 48 hours have passed btween the time you bring the new piece of Gear home, and the time the spouse discovers it, you usually have come up with a good enough cover story or alibi, and thus get to keep the GEAR. Under 48 hours, and you will definitely screw up, and that puppy is going straight back on ebay.

MPC: Abreviation of Mouthpiece. The unavoidable and seemingly innocuous precursor to full blown GAS.

AMP: Abreviation of AMPLIFIER. A box, usually black, always heavy, inevitably the wrong dimensions to fit in the car. Used in combination with a MIC (see below) and speakers, to allow you to be heard over drummers and guitarists. Saxophone player's AMP will go from 0 to 10 (soft to loud). Guitarists AMP will always go to at least 11.

MIC: Abreviation of MICROPHONE. Something to be tripped over, knocked over, used as a crutch during the final stages of inebriation and burped into at the worst possible moment. Also works with the AMP and speakers to make your sax or voice heard over the drummer and guitarists.

There you go. Hopefully other members will chime in with more.

Mark IV: Selmer saxophone of indeterminate origin.
TTYL: Talk to you later.
Martysaxed: You've been asked to take a little "vacation" from SOTW for awhile (c'mon, no groans: Marty mentions this, himself, in the Lounge).
31337 sp33k: "Elite speak". "Hacker-speak".
N00b ("Newbie"): Not to be confused with "Newfie", it's someone that's new to the Forum.
CTKI Error: "Chair to keyboard interface problem". The chair works. The keyboard works. Something in between caused the problem ....
Saxaphone: A mistake a n00b makes. Once.
Spam: You posting the same ad in several forum areas.
Smart Marketing: Me posting the same ad in several forum areas.

Before I have more fun with this than I have already, I really don't think that there are too many words/phrases we use that are too odd that you couldn't Google. YMMV. FWIW.

However, if'n a mod or someone wants, I wouldn't mind a new thread being called "SOTW Lexicon" or some such and stuffed in the FAQ and maybe this one being moved to the Lounge.

Learning the abbreviations is all well and good, but I wouldn't call using full sentances a 'bad habit' =P
