View Full Version : Rascher's exercise
I've been working on Rascher's last exercise before the overtone exercises start for abut two weeks, but am confused on one point. Am I supposed to try to pre-hear the fifth before I play it or am I just trying to hear the relationship of the fifth after it happens? I've been trying to do the former.
He states on page 8 to think in advance vividly so that you have he expeience of hearing the fifth (or the inversion - the 4th).
The reason is that the first mode overtone is an octave. The second mode overttone is a 5th. The next mode of overtone is a 4th, next is a major 3rd, then a minor 3rd, then minor 3rd, then major 2nd.
If you can't learn to pre-hear what note you're going for, the fingerings don't do much good.
I knew he wanted you to pre-hear the fifths on the previous exercise (which I worked on for about two months), but on this one, he only says, "To this (the fifth), precisely, our aim is directed," making it seem, to me, like we were only paying attention to it. Thank you for clearing up my confusion.
