i recently was offered an old saxophone from the 30s/40s from a older lady whos father had owned from new. It only has one identifying feature that i can see and that it has "broadway" engraved on the bell. can anyone tell me what make this is?

Chances are it's a stencil horn, made by one of the major manufacturers and engraved to order. You can find a guide here: http://www.drrick.com/stencil.html and it may also be worth checking some of the threads under Answers to Frequently Asked Questions: http://saxontheweb.myforums.net/viewforum.php?f=66
