The case that came with my PMST60 NS is nota quality case at all. what are your recommendations for a replacement that provides good protection but doesn't break the bank?

I bought a PMXT-66R on Saturday, and had the same feeling about the case. My main problem w/ the "fitted" hardshell case is that the slot for the neck seemed to let the neck flop around. I ended up buying a Pro Tec Contoured Tenor Sax PRO PAC Case (http://www.ptcases.com/items.asp?ProductID=251&InstrumentGroupID=8&CategoryID=2&InstrumentID=35). This case offers good protection, has side pockets for all my mouthpieces, stand, etc. and looks cool too, as it comes in many colors.:D Scimonett's (http://scimonetti.netfirms.com/store/nfoscomm/catalog/index.php?osCsid=4ec2d2a7b623e9dbc08699850538482e) sells them on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ProTec-tenor-sax-case-NEW-STYLE-SILVER-Brand-New_W0QQitemZ7383384970QQcategoryZ16234QQcmdZViewI tem) for about $110 plus shipping.

I have the same Pro Tec case for a 66R. Very happy with it.

I use a Gator GL contoured for mine. I also have a ProTec contoured. IMO the Gator offers the same amount of protection....weighs much less and cost is lower too. It also is a bit more compact on the exterior...about 2-3" shorter....has same amount of pockets on the outside and also a 2 spaces for mouthpiece/reeds, neck on the inside VS just a space for the neck inside the ProTec. If you are not into getting from WWBW, I bought my Gator GL from Musiciansfriend.com and got it 2 days after ordering it.....I think the grand total including shipping was around $75.

just remember, the cheap always comes out expensive........I followed the link to check out the Ameritage tenor case. Unfortunately, the photo didn't show much detail. What about this case makes it better than a Protec? Specifically, why is it worth over 3 times the money?

newking has shares in the company? :D
I think the protec is a good general multipurpose (except for shipping) case that should satisfy all your normal protection needs.
Ameritage. Search Function. ;)
Two pages of fairly decent info on these cases, including discission of Gator cases. http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=25471&highlight=Ameritage
A comment about the Gator case. I had one and really liked it. Internally it was configured somewhat like a Johnson, externally somewhat like a ProTec and the lightest case I have ever picked up. However, I didn't feel it was as protective as a ProTech, and I've had two of them in the past. A matter of opinion, perhaps but the ProTec just seemed a bit more substantial to me. The difference is perhaps not significant for normal day use, though.
I got mine from Scimonetti's.
