What is the diffrence between metal and non metal ligatures? Do you only use the material ones ( i'm assuming made from leather?) for metal mouthpieces?

Have a "search" through the archives mate. There's been a ton of discussion on this very topic.
To sum it up for you, pople use everything but the kitchen sink as a ligature. Metal, ( ye olde twin screw ) and material, ( a la Rovner ), and various scientifically proven models, that would be the cat's knackers, if only they didn't slip around.
Leather can work in a pinch. Socan most anything. As a long term option, leather stretches, which, in effect, rules it out as a long term option. :?
Some folks swear that the material ligs stretch too. Personaly, I lose my ligs, somewhere in my son's toybox, long before that would be possible, so I can't confirm nor deny that rumour.
Some players claim that different ligs affect the timbre of their sound. Mushroom munchers, all of 'em. :) Perhaps they can and do make a difference. I can't hear enough of a difference, to justify the "search for the holy grail," when it comes to ligs.
You can use whatever type you can find that fits. That is often the deciding factor. :)
Mess around, try out as many as you can. Don't spend a motza on a lig though. Save your money for the never ending muthpiece quest. :)

Hey, I like your sense of humour and approach! It seems we sometimes get too caught up on all the variables instead of just enjoying playing the beast!!

:)

You'd be in the minority at this point in time. In fact, the only reaon I'm bothering to answer your question, is because I'm quite literally "in the Dog House," after my temper got the better of me on another thread. :)

Just pulling your leg.

Fart around with equipment, it won't hurt to try different gear. You're right though, some players spend years searching for the perfect set-up, when it might have been more productive to spend the time just playing.

You can't knock 'em though. For a lot of Bruce's, especially all those mega wealthy, retired, late bloomers, collecting horns, mouthpieces, ligs etc, is all part of the fun. Good luck to them, and and here's hoping they have to sell all those fine horns, at bargain prices, to finance a hip replacement. :)

DP - You'd just love that wouldn't you? You're not getting your hands on my mouthpiece collection. :D

FWIW, In my experience, there is a bit of a difference between metal and non-metal ligs. For the most part, the fabric/leather ligs such as Rovners do tend to give you a warmer, subdued sound, and the metals a bit brighter, more projecting sound. Now don't get me started on the differences between standard metal ligs and others like FL, Vandoren Optimum, Fortissimo, etc.!!!
