I just bought an Boosey and Hawks Alto on ebay and i read here in the forum that they are Kohlert (bixley) stencils. I tried to look at the pics of the Kohlert Bixley horns on Saxpics but the link to the pics is dead.
This Boosey and Hawks Edgeware has rolled toneholes. Did Kohlert Bixley had that too?. I think i bought this one for a bargain. Anything knows something about the values on this horns? The serial i bought is 59XXX. Anyone knows what year these horns where built?
I have been reading here on the forum these horns must have a great sound and have a good solid construction although they are intermediate horns?

I cannot wait to blow this one and hope it arrives soon.

I saw the eBay B&H alto and was tempted to bid on it, but I sure don't need another alto! I have a B&H Edgware tenor (note spelling of "Edgware", there's no "e" after the "g"), rolled toneholes, which I really like, so I would expect the alto to be similar -- but I'm just speculatin'.

I received the horn today and i must say it is really in acceptable shape and has a great tone. Needs a bit cleaning and ajustment. Octave mechanism was bend but these are all minor things. It plays really good in tune.

NS, I also have an Edgware Alto. sn 59K. According to the charts I've seen, our horns would have been made in 1959. Mine has a nice sound, more spread then focused, really a change from most other horns. Hope you still like yours.

At this moment the Edgware is the alto i use and like the most. My daughter plays a BundyII bij Selmer. Comparing the Bundy has a loud and Raw Dark tone. The B&H Edgeware has a beautifull mellow tone and so pure and in tune and this with the standard mouthpiece of the BundyII. Especially in the high notes it keeps exactly in tune. Slight problem with the lower B but that is a bad pad. I will bring it to my sax repair man (Tim Brennan in Haarlem-The Netherlands) to restore it in "tip top" shape. The horn is worth it. For fun I played it also with a Berg Larssen Vintage Metal mouthpiece (its a tenor mouthpiece that I use on my Dolnet Tenor but it fits) and the horns sound changed from mellow to a roaring lion with a loud sound great for Pop music. I also have a Conn Ladyface alto but that needs to be restored first to compare it with the Edgware. My most preferable horn is my Goldplated Dolnet Tenor Belair Royal Jazz ( this is really an underestimated PRO horn, better sound than the conn ladyface tenor and better build). I like its Jazzy sound.
