View Full Version : User info on the left side of threads

I am doing some experimenting right now - do not get alarmed.
Do you have any prefernce on this issue?
For convenience purposes, to have the user info on the left side uses less vertical space.
However it's annoying to have the signature right under the message, espescially if you're writing a short message, the signature will appear right in the middle of the messages area.

I agree with Kim. I know there's an option (maybe it's a hack?) to align sigs to the bottom of the frame. If that happens here, I think it'll be perfect (or at least optimized under vb3's limits).

I like the new method. The location of the sig doesn't bother me, although I'd prefer if it was bottom-aligned.

I think it looks better in the new formats on the threads. However...
I just checked into my PM and with the Control Pannel on the left side, and then an additional margin on the left with this new format, it makes the actual PM window too crowded and small, IMO....lot'a wasted space, I mean.
If you do go with the new format, is there a way of only using it on the threads and leaving the PM windows in the original format?
I change my mind, unless there's a way to fix that.
When the user info is on the left side, the http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/images/statusicon/user_online.gif and http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/images/buttons/report.gif and the http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/images/buttons/ip.gif buttons are completely at the bottom left of the post. Meaning if someone writes a long post and that you'd wanna report it, it isn't that easy of access. Also there's the risk that it may be confused with the user who posts below - For mods & admin purposes it would also be a pain in the butt.
see what I mean?

It has a nice, FRESH look - but it does take up a lot of space.
By the way - thanks again Harri for re-opening the Market place.

I say on top, old style. Reason: I post a lot of short comments. Displayed the new way, brevity actually WASTES screen space. Especially if you use an avatar. See what I mean?

I think the older way just looked better, overall. Not many other forums do it that way, and I think it makes SOTW unique and special. :D

I can't pinpoint if I actually DISLIKE the new look or am simply unfamiliar with it and need time to get used to it. Hang on to it awhile and I'll let you know later on!;)

I think all the info in the left margin with the username, etc. looks better. As far as PMs go...doesn't matter to me.
Old style. Graphic demonstration of why at http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=36053 (i.e., other than the above whitespace issues, which I also dislike, if the user's name is too long, formatting gets wonky).
If you haven't noticed, the blue spacer between announcements, stickies and regular posts has gone bye-bye. Makes things look less clean, now.

I vote "old style", for all the same reasons as saxpics.

I'd like to specifically request that we go back to the "Old Style" with the user info at the top of the post. This thread (http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=36242) shows the impact of variable-width user info columns on readability.

Yup. The first thing I was taught in advertising layout class more than 40 years ago was "keep the horizontals horizontal and the verticals vertical". In other words, it's easier to read if the elements line up with each other across and down. Any good printer (assuming there are any left) will tell you that.

I'd like to change my original vote from on the left to back to the top.
Kind of like that love affair with a new mouthpiece fading after a week......

Is something different on the forums, I just can't pick it!
I like the look aesthetically, but I believe it really does waste a lot of page space. My vote is also to revert to the former format.
Timmy - the info under one's avatar was above and to the right. That meant that the large margin on the left that is now there, did not continue down the entire post as you see now.
Watch what happens if a post is long and how much page space is taken by the LH margin.
See what I mean?

The variable widths of the user info windows are really distracting. However, if there was a way to fix the width of the user info window so that overly long user names didn't monopolize the screen, I'd stick with the new way.

I can see the "problem" with the humongously long usernames. Might as well go back to the old way.

I feel strongly both ways. How many trees are cut down because of the wasted space in the left margin? I think if there is no financial reason to eliminate the column space in the left margin, it should be however Harri likes it.

In reality, it probably takes up much more wasted space keeping polls that are six or seven months obsolete active.:)
