If you are only getting a few hours out of a Rico Royal, there is something drastically wrong. I and many others use them with not problems like you're having. Maybe that vibrato you mastered a while back is destroying them. You ain't chewin' on them reeds, are ya boy? :D

Seriously though, luther, there should be no problem. Are they "warped and bent" after they have been good and wet, because soft reeds are usually curly at the tip until they get a little water-saturated.

Also, is this the first box of them you've played? Maybe you just got a bad batch.

I've tried several others but I only use Lavoz on alto. I love the way they sound w/ HR mpcs.

Luther, how do you store your reeds in between playing sessions? Are you using a reed guard, or some other flat surface so the reeds dry out flat?

Also, you should realize that cane reeds will warp. If you want to get the most out of them, you should learn to flatten the back of the reeds after you've broken them in, and they've settled into their "warp pattern". Check out this excellent post that describes how to do that: http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=249730&postcount=2

But to answer your question, I prefer La Voz reeds to Rico Royals.

I have used La Voz for 25 years and , though the quality has eroded somewhat, I still like my sound better on them than any other reed. I also like Rico Jazz Select, but they are pricey. It depends on your taste. A Rico Royal is a French cut reed, which doesn't work for me (Other than using Vandoren on clarinet). I have played Zonda, Marca, Hemke, Java, and ZZ and I still keep coming back to La Voz or RJS. YMMV

in my opinion n(no) reed can match the body of a la voz
