In memory of an unsung hero on tenor from my neck of the woods,Sal Nistico.I never and will never hear a tenor player with that tounge and finger thing so happening. He played up tempo things with ease.Just ask Sonny Rollins about him.

Hey Altoman,
Off topic regarding Sal Nistico...but I see that you have posted 'Utica' as your location. I was born in Utica and lived near there as a young boy...until I was 7 years old. I live a couple of hours north of there now...it's always kind of fun for me to cross paths with another Utican...

Sister Sadie , Woody Herman 1963 was an epiphany. 'nuff said

I heard Sal live with Woody at a dance gig in 1964. Epiphany is not a big enough word to describe his impact on me. A year later I heard him with Basie and got to talk to him. He was honest and helpful to me as a high school student (so was Marshal Royal).
In 1982 I ran into Sal again when he was with Woody in Japan, and I was with Jaco Pastorius. I got a private moment with him and I was able to express my gratitude for his playing and his earlier friendly concern for me. I have been thankful ever since that I got to talk to him that last time.

Sal Nistico's solo on Woody Herman's album "Encore - Live 1963" (or something close to that title) on the Caledonia track is simply phenomenal. Incredibly smooth technique and interesting ideas in a blistering fast tempo - one of my favorites solos that I've ever heard.
