So what's the best approach to finding a good Bari setup at a low price point? My priorities are:

1) Price: Below $3000, including repairs
2) Intonation/tone: Solid across the range
3) Ergonomics: I'm a big fan of modern key setups, especially the linked Bb-C# arm.
4) Sound: Power, versatility.

I've played a Yamaha 52 at school, and like it pretty well, but they run steep. I think I'm into it's focused, tight sound and light keywork more than that of the B&S 1000 here, which is a little more spread and rough, it seems. I've also heard great things about the Yani 901 and Keilwerth SX90, but they're even more. Are Masons, Sugals, or Milwaukees quality at all, or just ebay scams? And lastly, should I dismiss relaquered horns?

Consider a Vito VSP. It's a Yani B901 at a lower price point, but identical except for the case. I believe Kessler sells them.

I would look for used Keilwerth stencils...I just scored a Couf Superba that really rocks for $1900. King Tempo baris often come available...Sarge at WWSAX has one now for ~$2400 if I recall correctly with a fresh rebuild, ready to gig. Both of these have SBA-like ergonomics, so not completely modern, but pretty darn good. There is currently a Bundy (JK Stencil) on eBay for $800 BIN that looks nice...for that price you could have a premium overhaul and still be under $2000!!!

I bought a Vito bari (low-A) off ebay, put about $150 into it and love it. Mine is an older Yani (1976), probably a B6. I think I've got about $1050 or $1100 in it. I bought this horn because I was so inspired by the Vito VSP (901) I played in college. Find yourself a Yani Vito and at least give one a spin, I think you'll find the tight, focused sound you're looking for. They were also sold as Martins and Whitehall amongst other names.

I'd also echo the JK stencils. I have the ugliest Bundy Special (Bb) around and it has a HUGE sound and good intonation. Keywork isn't 'modern', but it is easy enough to get used to.
