He seemed like a really nice guy and was very funny even in those bad Disney films.

An original "man on the street" on the old Steve Allen show - "Ka-Boom!"
You all are probably too young to remember that.

Don was a really nice guy and quite different from the Barney Fife part that made him so famous.
He was a fraternity brother (Phi Sigma Kappa)and sometimes showed up for the occasional fundraiser at our house in Morgantown, where I got to meet him.
Sad to hear of his passing....

He and Andy Griffith, and the chemistry between them made that a beautiful television show. I still stop on it to watch anytime I see it. It was about more than just the laughs; interesting that AG was an up-and-coming comedian before that show, but often played the straight man in it. Don Knotts played a full range of emotions (if you look at the series as a whole), and made it much more effective (and affecting) than just a simple comedy.

Knotts was a reputed hypochondriac... he had his epitaph engraved on a hand-picked stone years ago... it reads:

"Told you I was sick."

The funniest Andy Griffith show of all was the one where the Mayberry civic band was rehearsing to go to the band festival at the state capital (Raleigh, N.C.). But the band was so lousy that the mayor wouldn't let them go. Fortunately a pro jazz band was passing through town and Andy finagled them into sitting in with the civic band to upgrade their sound and fool the mayor into thinking that the band had actually improved. Barney Fife was playing cymbals and would walk up behind someone and suddenly crash the cymbals. Drove Andy crazy. The last scene was the band driving off in a bus (minus the pros) playing the lamest version of Stars and Stripes Forever ever played. The mayor heard that and realised he'd been had. But it was too late; the band was on the way to Raleigh. Every time I see that episode I fall out the chair laughing. Barney going around clashing the cymbals in peoples' ears was hysterical.
