If you were to go to a desert island all alone for a year and you can take just 2 CD's with u, which ones would you choose and why?

First choice: Miles Davis' Kind of blue. The masterpiece of modern jazz. And you've got Trane and Cannonball for us sax addicts.

The second CD is more difficult, it would be either one by Sonny Rollins, Saxophone Colossus or the Village Vanguard (wait - these are three CDs already, if you count Vol 1-3 separately), or a Charles Mingus CD from the time he played with Eric Dolphy, most probably Mingus At Antibes.

It's only for a year, then I could listen to all the other great stuff again. The most interesting thing in Jazz for me is the huge variety of styles and personalities. So it is really hard to single out a few.

John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Sonny Rollins - Way Out West

(Of course, these would be the remastered, gold 24 bit, with a bazillion outtakes, as the outtakes are as good as the original, sometimes better.)

Women - The best jazz vocals

First is Swedish collection-cd that I bought used few years ago. It contains great pieces and its in quite good condition too :)

Second is another collection I bought. I like jazz vocalists, espesially women and it has so many good songs.

THOUGH I would have choosed my The Best of Glenn Miller and his orchestra - In the Mood , but it has 3 cd's so thats too much if we are allowed to bring only 2 cd's.

Can we assume that we can play them really LOUD.
If so then:
Morphine - Yes (Dana Colley's baritone)
Pink Floyd - Pulse (singalong)
I don't think I could put up with subtlety on a desert island.

Tie between Kind of blue and Dark Side of the Moon, (pink Floyd) for the other one. Big Floyd fan here...

My first choice CD would be "Timeless Cannonball Adderley". A collection of eight works he recorded in 1955 during a visit to N.Y. The second CD I would have is "Triumphant Sax!", which features John Coltrane, Gerry Mulligan,Coleman Hawkins, Johnny Hodges, and other greats. Joe.

wait......
does a desert island have electricity, cause my batteries won't last one year.

Ok i would take any Maceo Parker cd i could find just for the pure 98% Funk and 2% jazz.

Then either Dave Brubeck - Take 5 or maybe David Sanborn - Pearls for some sentimental moments, if htere were any.
Sand isn't the most appealing thing in the world.

Could you dance on the Island??

1. The best performance of Beethoven's 9th I can locate.

2. Variable. At the moment I'd probably take Beaver & Krause Wild Sanctuary/Gandharva double rerelease since this is my disc of the moment. This option would be different another day. Something a lot more modern. And Gandharva has Gerry Mulligan performing in Grace Cathedral ... so, you can't really top that for early electronic experimental music. Besides, I think the contrasting renditions of "Walking by the river" could keep me sane on an island for quite some time. Alternatively, I'd ask for a laptop and a CD of a train simulator.

Going to a desert island, I would at least bring the following two CDs:

1. Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane
2. Salif Keita: Soro

But, I would try to smuggle in at least one more CD, probably Jimmy Smith & Eddie Harris: All the way live, or maybe one CD by Fela Kuti or Kanda Bongo Man in case some other people would be stranded at the same island and ready for a party.

I'd take

1) Anthony Williams - Spring (and it's a short CD!)

2) Jackie McLean - Destination Out

Or, I'd see if they both fit onto a single CD, and then I could also take

2a) Coltrane/Ali - Interstellar Space

Do I win the trip to the desert island??

I recently got the John Coltrane Box with the complete Prestige recordings. I wonder if that could count as two CDs on the island since it is all in one box?

What a wonderful collection of music anyway. The more I listen to this guy, the more fascinated I get. The Prestige recordings are supposedly some of his early work, but still he playes extremely convincingly and with a lot of emotion too. Perfect technique, still the tunes are not exceedingly "technical", just musical.

Ok, I guess I could get the whole collection burned on 2 CDs with mp3s for the island trip...

Way too hard a decision . . .
I'd have to find a way to pick one of these:

People Time - Getz/Barron
Stan Getz and Bill Evans
Ray Charles' Greatest Hits (Georgia On My Mind . . . . )
Birth of The Cool - Davis
Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section
Don Ho's Greatest Hits
California Concerts (either volume) - Mulligan
The Essential Dave Brubeck

Then I'd take a CD-ROM with pictures of Catherine Zeta-Jones

Don Ho's Greatest hits?
I play in a band with a former member (bass) of Mr. Ho's band. He worked with him for two years, and finally said 'Don, I can't play this s*** no more.'

Perhaps some background is in order . . . . well, maybe not. But I'll tell you anyway.
The greatest love of my life became the greatest love of my life while listening to Don Ho (her personal favorite). I'm not talking about Pearly Shells or Tiny Bubbles. More like I'll Remember You, She's Gone Again, Blue Hawaii, Hanalei Moon, Hawaiian Wedding Song . . . This was back in the 60s when he had his show at the Coconut Grove. I about went broke taking her to see that damn show so many times. But believe me, it was well worth it . . . even the S*** !!
Now, many years later, I hear one of those songs and my heart breaks and I cry myself to sleep. Oh, the memories!:crybaby: (I just couldn't remember the name of any of his albums that would more accurately reflect the songs that affect me . . . sorry.)
So while those songs may cause some to grit their teeth and pull their hair and call them s***, I have good reason to put them up near the top of the list. The question was which CDs would I take.

If I could take my horn with me I'd bring:

Aebersold Volume 16: Turnarounds, Cycles, and II-Vs
Aebersold Volume 68: Giant steps (in all 12 keys)

... and practice, practice, practice..

I liked the story, and the tunes. Unlike jazz, the goal of entertainers is to give the same show consistently every performance. I think anything turns to s*** if you do the same thing the same way 5 or 6 nights a week.

Background is good. The Don Ho cd just stood out from your other selections.
