Hi,ive been visiting a sax teacher for around 5 months now,i see him every 2 weeks, thing is,he wants to mess around with my sax for half an hour and chat for a while also,im not one to judge but im very frustrated and when i think back i havent learned anything from him,all my practise is done about 2 hours every day at home.I know how important it is to have a teacher but how do you tell a good one from a bad one,he hasnt given me any instruction to practise, yesturday he came out with a comment that i thought was very unusual,he asked if i wanted to bring a learning book with me next time and we will start learning from it,i can already read music and i have been a proffesional singer for many years so i dont have any shortage of diaphram control or breath ,all the songs i play ive learned them myself,im not going back to him,i just cant find another teacher anywhere beside my home,im going to carry on practising myself,i dont have any choice!

Luther,

I have tried a few teachers before I found one that suited me well. I think it is a matter of finding one that fits with your ambitions and personality. I'm sure the other two I tried were good teachers, but we just didn't seem to click and I wasn't enjoying the lessons.

I would suggest mine, but he's not very near Tyne & Wear!!!

I did a lot of searching on the internet etc. but in the end the best source was the local music shop which had a list of teachers. I then searched on the internet for those specific teachers, spoke to a few and settled on the one that I use now.

Keep trying, keep practicing, I'm sure you'll find one in the end.

Hi Luther,

You could try talking to him about your worries but my feeling is that if he was going to change he would have been better in the first place.

I live in Morecambe and I know of four sax teachers in the area, I'll bet there are more than one in your area. I don't know how far you'd be prepared to travel. I went on the www.sax.co.uk site which has a list of teachers by county at:

http://www.saxophones.co.uk/saxophone_teachers.htm

One was Dave Clarke at Gateshead. If you want to have a chat e-mail me, my address is in my profile.

Pete
