I have an Alexandre Tenor which I believe was made sometime in the 70s. It is an Italian Horn with a fairly deep, strong voice. Is the soprano vintage or newer?

it's a vintage. it was my friend's father's one. it had a pretty big sound. was it a stencil or something? my friend wants to sell it for Malaysian Ringgit 1800. thats pretty cheap

If it plays in tune and has a great sound then buy it, if not then keep looking. This is the ultimate test, the sound is what is most important, not the brand name.

The Alexandre name was used on at least three models of instruments -- two of which were Italian-made and one was a stencil from SML (French).

I'm sure there are more, though.

I don't think that there is actually a saxophone manufacturer out there named "Alexandre". I think there was a company by that name and they stenciled instruments from other companies (i.e., they bought horns from other companies and put their name on the horn).

I really wouldn't know exactly who made the horn without seeing it -- and, even then, it may just be a good guess.

However, if it's actually Italian-made, I'd say it's probably a Rampone manufactured horn. If it's French, you've got a whole bunch of choices.

I do agree with Bootman: if it plays nicely and it doesn't have any serious mechanical problems, go for it.
