Although I have never played one, I have heard they are nice, if not a little bland.
Luther,
I'd agree with your friend. However, if you can find the original 'Signature' model (Trevor James aimed this one at the intermediate to pro market) you can pick these up for less than a new 275.
I used to own a silver plated Signature tenor and although it was not as good as my Selmer, in was a great horn none the less. I should have kept it.
Beware of the TJ sell on value though. There WILL come a time when you will want to upgrade it. Because TJ are a lesser known company, their resale value is poor.
Check Saxophones.co.uk. They come up on ex rental deals from time to time, and if you can land a Signature model, you'll be set.

They made both. I think you are getting confused with the UK Custom made horns, although they are also now available in Tenor.
Prior to these models, the Signature horns were of Taiwanese origin. I chose the Sig over the YTS62 and a Keilwerth EX90 II and could not fault it at all, but I started hankering after a Selmer.
I originally paid £1300 for my Sig (Not the cheapest of horns, but worth it), and sold it last year for £580. Ouch.

do you think the black nickel plated ones have a different tone to the gold laquer.

As long as it plays well I wouldn't pay much attention to finish vs sound etc, but as you are investing your cash into it you might as well get a finish that you like. A lot of folks disagree, but if you are playing an instrument that looks the biz to you, then I'm a firm believer you will actually play it better. All in the mind, but it works. :D
My curent Tenor is delacquered. Not because of any sound difference, but because I just happen to like tarnished horns.

Thanks for your experience russ, ive been playing tenor for 5 months and can play a few song with firm confidence, how long do you think this horn will serve me as i progress in my practise.
Luther,
If you acquire a Signature horn, you won't actually need to upgrade again. However, you will want to. ;)
