I知 having problems with breath control when playing.
After starting to play the first 2 or 3 breaths I take, seem ok, but as I take further intakes of air as I progress through the piece, I find I知 needing to take a breath, but before I can take the breath, I have to exhale stale air first.
When I complete, for example, a piece of music that is approx 12 plus bars long, I have a long exhale, then need to take several breaths quickly as though I致e just sprinted 60 meters.
The problem is I知 needing to breath in but have an excess of air to exhale first. It痴 as though not enough air is exhaled through playing before I feel the need to inhale again.
I知 mainly playing Method Book exercises or simple Etudes, breath marks are either indicated or I致e marked them in. I知 playing at approx 50-80 beats シ note.
I practice long tones and can sustain them ok and am aware of supported air and work on tone.
Other than playing the saxophone (Tenor ), I don稚 have any breath control issues, I知 healthy and a bit of a fitness fanatic and have good lung capacity. I知 sure it must be poor technique when playing the saxophone that is causing the problem.
I'm a beginner, been playing for approx 2 years and am a late bloomer. I often only play very short exercises, so the problem only arises on longer pieces or pieces without extended rests. I'm about to restart lessons with a teacher but thought i would post also for advice.
Am I getting hung up on something that comes naturally eventually or is there something fundamental I知 missing ?
