...and thank you for all the wonderful music and joy you have provided us with.

Putte Wickman, 81, died tonight local time after fighting a loosing battle against cancer. One of the giants of jazz and one of the finest clarinet players of all times. He was touring and spreading wonders across the world until this very autumn. His motto was "You have to do it while you're young"...
I wish that more of you could have experienced a concert with Putte as his performances were nothing but pure magic. With or without the clarinet in his mouth he left noone unmoved.
What a man, what a musician, what a life. We will miss you dearly.

Heard him in Copenhagen last July. He played great. More people should have had the chance to hear him – especially those who prefer to ignore the clarinet in post-swing music.

Not only never heard him, but never heard of him before. Can you enlighten us about his career and playing style a little?

Go to www.gazell.se, click on "Artister" in the upper left corner, and then choose Putte and scroll down for soundclips from some of his records.

My first contacts with jazz came thru listening to Swedish musicians like Putte Wickman, Arne Domnerus, Bengt Hallberg, Lars Gullin et al.
I was a schoolboy then, proud of my new Selmer clarinet. Putte Wickman was one of my first influences, after Benny Goodman, before Tony Scott and Buddy DeFranco.

Later I had the pleasure of listening to him at a small jazzclub, it was sometimes in 70's.

A splendid musician and brilliant clarinet player, really nice and swinging.
