I just got this Tenor off ebay, seller said it may be an early "Rudy Wiedoeft" model or a precursor of it. Anyways, I was wondering if it was silver or nickle plate?
Thanks.

Silver. Nickel was usually bright back then, silver usually satin finish.
The Wiedoeft models started to appear in the late 20s but didn't do terribly well in the market. Holtons had had many of the same special features for years previously.
Your horn obviously has some of the "Master Key" features (alternate trill keys), and the venting or speaker key down by low C. I'm not sure what was added to the Wiedoeft models; maybe someone else can chip in there.

I believe you have a "Beaufort" model Holton, not a Rudy Wiedoeft model. Every Wiedoeft model I have seen from alto to B flat Tenor has had the bell key on the same side and not split as in your example. Tell us what you think of the horn when you've spent some time with it. Cheers.

I didn't think the beaufort models had the low C extra vent key.All the Rudy and beauforts have the name engraved so it should say the model when it arrives

Thanks, saxismyaxe, for the reminder about the left bell on the Rudys. I had actually forgotten! :banghead:
Wasn't Beaufort a student line, like Collegiate later on? I had thought the pro line before the Rudys was called Revelation. In any case, a lot of pre-Rudys are just marked Frank Holton & Co. / [location, see below].
I recently saw a tenor in NYC similar to the above, but without the speaker key, and engraved Chicago instead of Elkhorn, Wis. as most Holtons were. (Chicago marking would date it pre-1917, Elkhorn, post-1917.) I'll try and get back to the store and snap some pictures (I also like to visit their cat. :cat:).

Hi Paul,
Yes you're right about the Beaufort vs. the Revelation, and I believe I was mistaken about it being the former. Maybe together, with Dave Dix's help we can come up with one, complete, accurate answer for this guy!:D

I'm not too up on the holtons, it may be a revelation made by holton or possibly a stencilled one but by the picture it seems holton made and with a front top F key.
Any more pics around the serial number ? and whats engraved on it ?

Around the serial number says:
Bb
38***
L P
On the bell engraving is written:
MADE BY
Frank Holton &Co.
ELKHORN
WIS.
On the 'speaker key' it say:
PAT.
APLD.
FOR
It also has the last three digits, and sometimes entire, serial number on most of the key undersides.
Right now I can say it is much easier to play then my two True Tone Bueschers (alto bari). I can hit the low notes on this SOOOOOOOO easily compared to the other two.
EDIT: It also has a corkless neck with a corked adaptor sleeve because it was supposed to be used with some special Holton mouthpiece that screwed directly onto the neck.
