I know my 991 is up there (yanis are one of the big four), but i saw some pretty good saxes for much less, such as cannonballs, and some keilwerths. For example, i saw a silver and gold cannonball DC PRO SERIES II LARGE BELL. http://www.dominicsmusic.com/productpages/prod_912.html

how does this sax compare to my 991, or even a 901?

That is not a cannonball! You're the second person in as many days who posted thinking that dominic DC pro or whatever is a cannonball. Don't be fooled! I haven't looked at the site but is he calling those cannonballs?

OK I looked at it. HE doesn't say they're CB's. Why does he give a full desc. of the CB? Weird man...

I don't know if he's changed what is said in the ad, but it's really pretty funny. He almost literally says "Cannonball's a much better horns, this one I'm selling is crap." Too funny.

That is REALLY funny... "Cannonballs are MUCH BETTER"... wow.

To answer the previous question, dont be fooled. Your Yani will outplay ANY Taiwanese made horns (including the Cannonballs).

Its like driving the top end Toyota and then trying a Benz or a BMW. They do do the same overall thing but which is better.

Heck, even the A901 will outplay them in my opinion and the opinion of my techs. Dont fret it man, you got gold with the 991.

The Yanis are great horns. If you have paid the average price for it, you got a good horn for the money. The manufacturing quality will ensure you a good horn for the years to come.
If you like the sound you are getting, I would not be concerned about brand x or y.

Been playing my 991 for a little while now.

Dave, you mentioned that Yana's are like a Benz or Beemer.

Here's another lesson learned: I agree with you, but would choose something like a Ferrari as the example. They want to be played hard, fast and loud.

I had to experiment with a bunch of reed/mouthpiece combos before I got the low volume tone of preference. I am very pleased with all levels/tonalities now.

At speed it will truly outperform anything else I've tried. Yana's are so mechanically sound.

What combination did you finally come up with as I'm trying to settle on something I like but am limited to the mouthpieces I can try.

Speaking specifically about low to medium volume play, for ensembles, sectional play, orchestra pit stuff, etc:

Selmer C**, Vandoren Optimum Ligature with the type 1 plate. Vandoren standard blue box reeds. Free-blowing and expressive without being too bright.
