I am looking at a Tenor for a backup horn and I have found a Tenor that has nothing else engraved on the bell except Olds. It's regular laquer with chrome rods & keys.It also has a high F# key.It plays good enough for a backup, the guy wants $475.00 . Anybody have or have seen one of these? I am mostly worried about finding replacement parts if I ever need them. Is this a oddball I should stay away from?

What does the bell to body brace look like? If it is ornate, it could be a Buffet Dynaction stencil. Saxpics dot com has pictures.
Olds made the student ambasador line as well. That's about all I know.

If it's a solid player and you like it,you can't go wrong for the bucks. There are a number of Olds saxes out there. The real likelihood of needing parts is pretty slim. I would not base a decision on spares availability.

I found a tenor on our local brass and woodwind shops website. I went down and played it and what a beauty. She looks great sounds better and the button lay out is awsome. there are a few problems. sticking keys the pinky cluster is really stiff and the cork is 50 years old and is smooth!. The guy says he can fix all that stuff for me. other than that it sounds just as it is, very french vintage. asking price 700 CDN so i put 100 dollars down. What are your thoughts? This would be my first personal horn (i've always rented or borrowed from my school) and i'm going into university next september.

The Olds sounded just as good as a Selmer Bundy II that he also has for sale but he wants $650.00 for the Bundy vs $475 for the Olds. So I'll proably take the Olds as it is just going to be a backup horn.

Im pretty sure I had this same tenor as a school insturment. It was ok, nothing super about it, but it was decent(alittle resistant though...). The main bad thing that i remember about it though was that the high A was really flat and wimpy sounding, im not sur why. As a back up horn for $470, id say its not a bad bargain.
But then again, i dont have that much experience with good horns

I had an Olds all through high school. It's honestly a decent horn. Mine was VERY leaky and VERY old, so I could not play below low E :( Which was quite a drawback. Repadding woulda done it but I wasn't as serious then, and just wanted to have fun. When I bought a soprano and (recently) my new Z I can play the full range and its great! I'm tempted to get the Olds overhauled as a backup and also just to see how it does just for fun. If I end up doing it I'll be sure to tell you how it goes.
