Just went to a pawn shop and they had a nice lil alto there with the logo "hermes". Has anyone ever heard of this? It looked very nice, the metal was thick and it seemed well made. The logo has the word hermes in the middle of some kind of circle of leaves.

Thanks

Finally.....lol I waiting to hear from someone who has played or have heard one of these horns played. It actually looks like a Selmer stencil. the music store here has one that looks identical to it except is a selmer paris.
I really have not played it like I want too, because the G# key is out of wack, and it is in the shop right now, but the little I did play on it sounded GREAT!!!!! Thats why I went ahead and bought it, hopefully after it comes from the shop it will sound better.

It's a Selmer clone. They're from the same factory as Monique. They must have copied a Selmer dud, because the 2 that I tried had lower octave vent problems, similiar to some newer Selmer series II. The vent is too small, thus the high G and G# will crack and drop down an octave.

Not to say anything good or bad about Hermes saxes, but I saw a booth at a Jazz Festival last week that made lamps out of saxes, flutes, etc. They used brand new Hermes saxes (alto, tenor and soprano)... their tenor sax lamp was less than $400.00 and that's got a marble base!!! So I'm pretty sure that U can find 'em for less than that somewhere if U end up liking 'em :) The action of the lamp felt pretty good, I gotta say!

The Hermes name was dropped by Prestini a long time ago so if the lamps have new Hermes saxes on them they must have been old stock from somewhere.

Your Hermes is an early Taiwanese Selmer clone that was sold by Prestini and since it likely has Prestini pads it may be an ok horn. Like most Taiwanese horns, there have been many improvements over the years with regard to intonation and build quality.

Here is my Prestini Classic Alto (engraving by Jason Dumars):

Oh, might have been Heimers. Actually, the more I think about it, I'm pretty sure it was Heimers. Doh! (sorry)

Peace,

The stock mouthpiece that came with my Grand Tenor Sax is a Hermes. It seems to play well, but I'm looking at a couple Runyons to replace it anyways.
