View Full Version : Practicing overtones (dumb question)
Recently I started practicing overtones on the lowest three notes of the tenor (hitting the octave and next fifth). I understand this is preliminary to developing altissimo, but aside from that, what's the benefit of practicing overtones? Does it improve your overall tone? Not clear on the payoff.

Practicing overtones does several things. It wakes up your vocal cavity and vocal track to the importance of voicing, which will effect your qualtiy of tone and ease and flexibility in producing the tone you want.
You can compare the first through fifth overtone modes with regular fingerings and improve voicing by matching overtone voicings with the regular fingerings. You can through comparisons find about where your mouthpiece should be placed on the neck cork to play your particular instrument in tune with itself. THen you have to align that with a tuner.
Overtones plus long tones will help develop muscle memory to give you the best chance of playing your horn in tu;ne with an even tone quality. Through voicing you can also change or move around tone colors to suit your interests or your playing situation. Good luck and have fun.

It also enables you to play special effects such as multiphonics and glissandos.
