I've been gigging with my PMST-66 since I bought it last month and using my trusty Ponzol M2. The dark horn/bright-ish mpc works well together. This week I've dug out a few other mpcs to see how they work and I'm finding that the Ponzol is the best match, for me, that I've found so far. The P is the darkest horn I've owned so I'm wondering if other people have gone to a brighter mpc.
I'm still really diggin' on the P. Dark, throaty sound with an amazing amount of power. It can take all the air without sounding harsh.

Refaced Meyer 7 on my alto. I thought it worked perfectly fine for me. I can get it real nice, bright, and edgy, but also play darker if needed. I sent it of to Ed Zentera (ez_sax) to get some bite marks removed and get it refaced and should have it back this evening. Can't wait to play it again.
I may try an ESP for it to see how it fairs, but I'm completely happy with the Meyer.

Tom,
I know the feeling. Ever since I got my PMXT-66R there are several brash, bright mouthpieces I have that I am soooo glad I had not traded or sold since having the P darkness tame the shrillness out of them to the point of making for a great combination of nasty and nice. A couple of pieces I am finding to work quite well are a Lamberson 7DD Acetal, Guardala Super King and most recently a paint peeler I just got on a trade a JVW Dukoff 7S. The 7S on my other tenors is flat out caustic but given the vibe of the P seems to just be more like harnessed power.......sorta like the Dodge commercials.....yeah that's a Hemi in there!
I can't help but to thing that the finish on these P Custom Class horns really are neat in that they season/darken the tone core some without sacrificing the vibration. To me these horns are the best balance compared to most new modern horns. Most newer horns to me play fairly bright and are so free blowing I don't feel they offer enough resistence to allow the player to have a better range of articulation and expression. To me I don't know if it is the bore/ the finish or what but I think P. Mauriat found that "it" factor we like about old vintage horns but still allow us to have better intonation and ergonomics. Sorry to ramble, after years of buying and trading so many different saxes from different eras I feel like I have found the one that gives me all I have been after in one instrument.

i have a new brilhart levelair waiting for me in my mailbox for when i get home today...i think it will work to balance the darkness of my 66r..and really make it scream if needed...i play moslty r&b/rock/funk..with the occasinal jazz gig thrown in..currently playing a claude lakey HR that also helps bring the P. Mauriet out of the "dark" and into the light..kind of anyway
just my 2 pesos
ps-i love this horn

I've been using a Fred Rast J 118. It is simply the FATEST sound I've ever had on tenor. Definitely more of a traditional tenor sound. When I want to brighten it up a bit, I use a vintage fat bodied HR Berg Larsen 110/2. I am still able to get a fairly thick, muscular sound without sounding shrill. I am comtemplating getting a Ponol M2. I tried one out in a live venue not to long ago, and it sounded great. It was definitly brighter than I'd like most of the time, but I had a great contemporary sound with it on my 66R.
It may sound funny, but I feel like my 66R was custom made for me. It is EXACTLY the sound I've been looking for in a tenor for the last 10 years. On top of that, the ergonomics are great. I felt like kind of a dufus gushing about my horn last year, so it feels great to see other players just as enthused about what I feel is the BEST (semi) mass produced modern tenor made right now. I've never tried an Interbinben, but I don't think I could ever afford one anyway.

That's something I am starting to think about. I just ordered a 66R Tenor from Tim at Sax alley, to be a dark counterpart to my (IMO) brighter Yani T991. I play what are seemingly dark mouthpieces ( JJ ESP-wedge with no spoiler, Barone Jazz, Link STM , and JJ HR*), and I am worried that maybe the Dark Mpc-Dark horn combination will be too dark. It took a while to assembly my mouthpieces, and I sure don't want a suitcase full of these things. Maybe using brighter sounding reeds should help out.
Does anyone out there use this dark and dark combo, and how is it playing for them?
Thanks
OO

I posted this in the thread on the horn comparisons, but it applies here as well...
I've also been listening to a great alto player at a local ski lodge the last 2 weeks who plays the PMSA-71M using a Meyer 6. This horn has a matte finish closer to the color of the Selmer Ref 54. His sound is so dark compared to the sound of my Selmer Series II, I'm concerned my 67R is going to be way darker than I want. He has very little projection, even playing at a mike.
Is it the Meyer 6 or what?

OOlufoks,
I play a pretty dark mouthpiece (Rast J) on my 66R. It sounds great. Even my Zagar Cool School sounds great on my sax. In fact, my 66R is much less mouthpiece picky than my The Martin tenor. I've been using my Rast/66R combo in live situations without a mic, and I've had no problem being heard.
GAS_Wyo,
a Meyer 6 with a good air stream should get you a great sound. I tried a 67R at Sax Alley, and I didn't think it was a super dark horn. My old Martin alto is darker, and I can cut through a band with my Selmer Super Sessions (which is a darker mpc than a Meyer). How long have you been working on your sound (long tones, harmonics, modifying your oral cavity)?

Well, not all that long! I guess I'm not following what you mean. I sound medium (not too bright, or dark) to many listeners with my Geo. Bundy 3. However, I stepped up to a Dukoff D8 and WOW! I got a sound out of that horn I didn't know existed. The horn just filled up with sound...especially the bottom end.
How should I be thinking about my sound?:? :?

I picked recently, meant as an experiement, a Java T95 on Ebay for just 36$.
All I can say is wow!! This is quite possibly my best deal in all my sax-playing life.
It is great also on my Mark VI but it is on the Mauriat 66R that is truly outstanding. I highly recommend this mouthpiece to anyone looking for a dark but flexible sound, since its natural darkness can be altered when pushed.
I was very concerned for the wide opening (for me) of 0.115" but, perhaps due to the long facing curve, it is really easy to play. Dark as a Tone Edge but easier blowing. Best HR mouthpiece I've tried out of a long list (mind you, it doesn't include yet Lambersons and RPCs).
My 66R (both with Super VI or stock neck) never sounded so good.
I got a Morgan Vintage 6 that I use on my 67 (non R). It is a lush, sweet sound and is a total joy to play. All the notes just bubble out.

Thought I would update what has been working well for me for the past couple of months. I am very happy with the way my SaxScape Red River .115 plays, sounds and performs on my P. Mauriat PMXT-66R.

Hey Mark, which P neck do you like best with the Red River?

Nevermind Mark :)
Found your answer on another thread:
"As much as I like the Super Jazz VI neck I recently got a great new mouthpiece from Saxscape.com and I like the way it responds and plays better with the original neck......."

I've been using a Berg 130/1 with a Runyon spoiler inserted. I did this set up with my The Martin some 5 years ago and it worked well. Dark with a stiffer reed and subtown emb and pretty edgy with an Alex 2 reed. K

More recently I've been playing a Link STM 7. I have a bright sound anyhow. This horn mellowed my playing to 'reasonable'. On my 66R I can make the Link sound like a Mk VI or a Yanagisawa/Yamaha. It's all airstream for me!
I don't have the Jazz VI necks yet, but I can't wait to try one.
