This is difficult to explain clearly but I'll try.

When I play legato up the scale (tenor by the way) as I cross the register from C to D, the D doesn't always sound right, I can't properly explain what I mean.

I know that the D is a 'weak' note, that's not the problem, it sounds OK when I tongue the notes.

This mis-sound doesn't always happen and I'm having trouble finding a cause for and an answer to the problem.

Sorry the question is so vague but it maybe that this is a common experience. The note sort of breaks. I'm sure there's a proper description but I'm a beginner.

Are you getting a higher note (A2)? Going from C2 to D2 you can sometimes get an A2 IF your left hand 3rd finger is late going down. The D2 has a little more blowing resistence than the C2, so make sure your air is really steady on the C and keep it firm while going to D.

If it's not your third finger, have a repairman check you octave mechanism to be sure it's working properly.

If you're getting the A2 note, that's possible fingering the low D and voicing your oral cavity and vocal tract. A2 is the 2nds mode ovetone of D1. Good luck and have fun.
