View Full Version : new mpc for alto ?
hi
while doinf some research on the net about which mpc to buy i found this forum and i believe i can get some advices from u :)
i've been playing for over a year now, i have quite cheap horn of unknown german brand (thomann) but it's doing surprisingly good :D i have a mouthpiece that came with it and also S-80 C* - they r both quite similar...lately i've tried my friend's vandoren A45 and i liked it so much ! the sound was so much brighter and jazzy
so now i'm thinking about investing in a new mpc and with such a huge choice i simply get lost :| can u pls suggest me something? sth more sharp and funky than s-80 ?
thanx a lot

Boe: If you liked the Vandoren so much, why not buy one? They are considered to be fairly consistent as over-the-county pieces. Other popular choices are the Meyers (I have two that are wonderful; 7M-Small Chamber and 6S-Medium Chamber), and Selmers (I have a Super Session F and a Soloist F that are nice). DAVE
They are considered to be fairly consistent as over-the-county pieces.Isn't there something in the law that says you can't do that?...transporting a piece over the county line? :D
btw boe, i'll bet you would really like a runyon custom, either red or blue. Check it out:http://www.runyonproducts.com/custom.alto.html
these r good mpc's, the cost is low and they play really good.
imo jumping from a 67 opening (ur C*) to a vandoren A45 (86 opening) might a bit of a jump.
Vandoren A45 is still the option but i wanted to have more choice...and now of course i start to think that maybe indeed it's to big step....planning to check a few in the shop but i don't want to stand there and show which one i want to try only because they look good :) well, since i'm a girl i might actually get away with it, but i do want to spend money wisely :)
i read that meyer G gives also a nice sound, no?
with A45 i had one weired problem, though...i'm quite loud in general, even with this short chamber softy mpc i'm using now (pls forgive my completely unprofesional descriptions ;) and with A45 i've made the floor thrill  don't know how this works :D anyway, i'm writing all your suggestions down and i do believe it'll help me to do a right choice

Gary: Not if you're licensed . . . but I admit to a typo. COUNTER was what I was after!! DAVE
Gary: Not if you're licensed . . . So. That was Jerry Lee Lewis' mistake?
Gary, i checked the runyon website but did not found any info about the mpcs (not talking about the pics:)) what is a difference between the colors...or is it just different color ?:D
i'm trying to imagine what would my teacher said if i'd buy the one with a spoiler in order to play louder :D ...i'm far from good but apparently i was born with the right attitude ;)
boe - click on mouthpieces (left side of window) and then when the photos of the mpc's pops up simply click on alto mpc and another window will open with the various alto mpc's. For more info. click on the individual mpc. Also click on the right side "View Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece Sound Charts Click here" for some interesting info.
The various colours are on the mpc page. For example, the tenor mpc is shown blue. Click on that and you will see a few more blue mpc. Just look around the site. You can also see the same colours if you go to Jody Jazz' site because Jody uses Runyon blanks for his mouthpieces. As a matter of fact, if you want to spend a little extra money, you might consider one of Jody's mpc's: http://www.jodyjazz.com/mouthpieces.html. The colours don't have any effect on the sound, BTW - just "eye candy". But they do look distinct.
Regarding the Custom itself, colours aside, you might want to know that the last few years of his life Art Pepper played a Runyon Custom #7 (red). You could tell that to your teacher ;) FWIW, I play this same mpc and it's very good and it is not expensive. As a matter of fact, when Art Pepper got his directly from Santy Runyon, he gave Santy his Meyer mpc, a tribute to the Runyon.

thisis what i meant...i did not find any info regarding the color, so just wondered...since the i-net doesn't pose a huge mistery to me i did find all the rest ;) but thanx anyway for the explanation :)
since i've been playing c* , the 5# or 6# should b a next choice, i guess?
gonna check the other brand as well
i'd lie if i say that the price isn't an important factor here :)
i'm overwhelmed by the amount of mpc's to chose from:) this is absolutely crazy
but, i'm gonna definitely try jody jazz, runyon custom (just read plenty of good stuff about it )
how about Meyer HR or "G" ?
thisis what i meant...i did not find any info regarding the color, so just wondered...since i've been playing c* , the 5# or 6# should b a next choice, i guess?I would probably get a #6 Runyon, but you could use this comparison chart to decide how big a jump in tip size you want to make: http://www.runyonproducts.com/alto.facings.html
