I would like an opinion of the stock mouthpiece that comes with the yanagisawa alto. A 'Yanagisawa Steel Ebonite 5' that came with my A992.
Is it a good mouthpiece? I see on WWBW that its much more expensive than some other mouthpieces, and while I know that $$$ doesn't equal +++, it makes me wonder if I have a super mouthpiece that I'm not using (just because I had a C* before and was more comfortable with it, I just never got around to playing with the yana).

Does anyone use theirs? General opinions?

It's an excellent proline mouthpiece. Some folks like them better than the C*. I've moved into larger tipped mouthpieces or I may have still been playing mine. I think the chamber is a little larger than the c*.

Not everyone likes the standard Yani 5 HR mouthpiece, but I have a full compelment (SATB) and they all get used. I find they are a bit richer sounding than the C* and the facing is more useful on the S, T and B whereas the Selmer C* is a bit closed for those horns. Whilst it may not be to eveyone's taste, it is wrong to dismiss it out of hand, and well-worth a serious try.

I use Yani HR5s on sop, alto and tenor when I want a darker sound than I get with other pieces I like. Very useful pieces, well finished and reed friendly. Sometimes Yani buyers immediately dump them on EBay for cheap--that's how I got all of mine.
