Looking for a DMB fan who plays sax and wants to play with a group of PRO musicians... and of course who loves DMB as much as we do! We need a horn player with skills to learn actual parts and be able to jam/ improvise... also someone who plays all 4 horns. You'll be the last piece in a sensational DMB tribute band...we're going places. Lots of WELL-paying gigs and great contacts waiting for band line-up to firm up. If you love to play LeRoi's riffs and are good at improvising, we're looking for you! :hello2:

These guys posted on Harmony Central as well. They left an email on that, and here it was.....buckyfang@excite.com.
Sounds hokie to me though, who would want to play just the music from one group? Would get pretty tiring after about a week or so.

Larry-I agree. Might be a corporate party setting the thing up.
I hear ya on the playing of the _same_band etc. Though...I was very surprized and shocked to find out how many younger kids/college etc liked this band and the impact they have on youth. I can see casinos and corportate partys using " stuff " like this for events. It will provid work.
How long a player could deal would be another story.:? ;)
LeRoys parts seem pretty "seat of the pants" and it might be more fun for a young cat, with that in mind.
You know...A GIG IS A GIG.8-)

FYI if you click on the user name you will get a drop down menu with email, private messaging, and web page info. It depends upon what the user supplies, but in this case, it's there.
FWIW, Backstreets, a jersey band has made a career, a mighty long one, since I remember seeing them in the early 80's, doing Bruce Springsteen and the like.

Good point Bill, however, I would say that Bruce provides a bit more, and definitely more eclectic material than the Dave Matthews Band. Although I like DMB, I don't like em that much. BTW, I sat in one night with The B Street Band, (as they are now called due to some patent question or Bruce request last year), up at Headliners in Neptune earlier this year and they played some Stones tunes and some other motown stuff during the night. The sax player, Jimmy, does a great job with the Clarence licks with his red LA Sax tenor.....Great guys...They are working once to twice a week all over the place....they just toured Fla and also sponsored their own cruise! Hey Tim, why don't we start a tribute band? Its gettin cold and snowy up here!
I got the impression from the DMB post, that DMB is what they were limiting to. To me, that means the same tunes, every gig, same order, etc. That would be music for the JOB of it, and fortunately, I don't need the money that bad.
It would be GREAT experience for a college player, or someone needing the side money....Hope they find what they are looking for. Cool that they found SOTW.....Maybe start seeing some more gig related advertising......

Larry,
I was just pointing out that there are tribute bands, and they do get work. Yes, I take your point about a DMB gig being repetitive, heck I fight that boredom with just playing in coverband.
Officially Backstreets is B-Street, but when the club puts their name up in lights (came about a number of years ago when sued by the Backstreets magazine btw)....
I was with the band several years ago while covering an election night, they were the band for Dick Zimmers campaign HQ party (which since he lost they only played about 3 tunes all night) I met Jimmy, seemed like a nice guy asked me to sit in, but since I was working radio that night I didn't have my horn. I spoke with Willie, and we had a couple laughs about getting old... I remember seeing them when they were Star and did a Springsteen Set, and then when they morphed into Backstreets.
I have another kinda funny story, but I won't derail the thread any longer...

Yeah, really nice guys. the LONGEST running active tribute band around. Thanks for clearing up the Backstreets - B street thing, I never asked them about it.
As far as tribute bands....Yeah cover bands can get boring, unless you keep adding new material, and changing the song a bit from the original. Unfortunately, a lot of club/party attendees want to hear the solo from certain old tunes, the way they hear it on the record. Oh well, at least we get to play in front of people....and we get to add sax solos to tunes that never had a sax solo before...and we get free beers sometimes....
Sorry, I won't derail it anymore myself. Good luck PhillyDMB. If you don't find anybody, I'd be willing to do a gig or two for a few hundred bucks....each night.

To be blunt- Philly could use some R & B bands like a couple of dozen to start!
And it lacks JAM bands. Most in Philly are wedding cats or show guys who are great.
I'd love to see MORE Jam bands like GALACTIC or RATDOG or even MM&W,
the city lacks that element bad.
Yea yuk snow- ughhhhh#!@#$!@#~@$#@%~#% I'm not ready for it:x 8-)

Right ON. Who is MM&W? Supposedly my new band will start some original stuff along with the R & B, R & R covers we are doing, ala Liquid Soul or the like...a little more jam, and little more improv...
Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Yeah, Philly NEEDS more R&B bands. Whatever happened to Junior Klien and the Recliners? Or the Rocket 88s? They had a sax player who was a great bar walker! If you're going to get falling down drunk in the snow, you need a soundtrack.

Thanx Zoot, I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way.
As quiet as it's kept, etc , there are NO R&B bands in the area at all.
Sure there's some little things, but nothing of a real RnB level taste wise with horns and screaming saxes.
Odd, cuz at one time Philly had some world beaters within the city limits.
The DMB thing, is ok, but to me it's a " be there, did you hear it " kinda thing with youth. IF,,they were exposed to someting better,, I think they'd head that way.
Yea, Philly NEEDS R & B bands- AMEN.8-)

Forgive my naivete(sp?), but what would a true RnB band be? Bone, Trumpet, Three Saxes? What would be the cover tunes? I am not sure I really understand genres anyway. Funk covers a lot of ground, and RnB surely covers some Rock and Roll, all of the blues, and some jazz/fusion/funk as well.
Seems to me that you guys have hit on something. If the area is lacking it, then them there spells opportunity for players.
Do these guys, the Big Package Band, fit into the RnB area? They are from Wilmington. Haven't seen them yet, but have heard good things.

Interesting thread .
A drummer I play with is a big fan of DMB and it's drummer Carter Beauford.
He loaned me some concert DVDs, so I finally got around to seeing what the
big deal is w/ DMB, after all these years of basically ignoring them.
I liked them a lot more than I expected to, as a band.
I think Leroi is one of the weaker links in that band, particularly as a soloist.
Boyd Tinlsley(violin) is also on the bland side, as a soloist,IMO..
That band is cemented in their popularity/fan base, so Leroi is not really an
issue within the family(the band and fan base) but a better saxophone
player would have a good time playing w/ a tribute band if they could play
the material . Carter Beauford(the DMB drummer) is a hard act to follow,
and really is the ace in the hole; I'd say, along w/ Dave's onstage charisma;
Dave is a very unique writer, also.
There's plenty of solo space in those tunes, and you could play whatever
you wanted to; Dave is wide-open, and really listens and understands and
appreciates the more adventurous stuff.
If this tribute band is following similiar lines, and has work lined up, it'd
be a great gig to take.
I'd, surely, go after the gig if I still lived up that way .
You could solo on soprano alto tenor and bari saxophones ?!?!!
That would be a lot of horns to schlep, though, and you would need
a protective stage area for your axes-- ya wouldn't want some hippy girls
tripping over your Saxrax whilst undulating seductively, nearby:D
That reminds me of the time I saw Bruce Hornsby perfoming on TV a couple
of years, ago .. A bunch of hot young girls jumped up on the stage and
started grooving to the band's music, maybe 6 or 8 girls.
As they made their way closer to Bruce and his piano, he almost turned
a shade whiter !!!
It was really obvious how nervous he looked(?) .. and he didn't even crack
a slightest hint of a smile -- these were really attractive young lovelies !!
My first thought was : "Is Bruce's wife at home watching the telecast ?"
Wife: "I saw the way you looked at that girl in the tiedyed sarong !!!"
Bruce: `` but .... but .. but .. I, uhh, I ....`` :(

Medeski -Martin and Wood are probally some of the _more_intense musicians on the ~jam band~sets.
Wood I just caught in NyC with Skerik and Johnny V.
Serious dedicated people/muicians in it for the marathon.
