I'd like to add an oboe to my doubles. I've rented one and am having moderate success...I've been watching Ebay to get my own. Most plastic oboes are in the $250 to $350 range...except for Linton...they tend to go for around $100 less. Can anyone tell me about this make of oboe? Thanks

Lintons can be an adequate student instrument for middle schools if they are properly set up. They rarely are.

If you really want to play it as a double, look for a used pro oboe or buy a Renard 330. Figure on spending at least $2500 US for something playable.

Agreed. In a best-case scenario Lintons are "adequate"--for a young student who isn't concerned yet about playing in tune. I think the Yamaha student model is just slightly better (but only just). The Fox Renard is the way to go if you're not ready do spend REALLY serious money.

Unfortunately doubling on oboe isn't nearly as cheap as doubling on clarinet or flute. A few thoughts here (http://bretpimentel.com/doubling/buyingwoodwinds.htm#oboe) on what to look for in an oboe.

Unfortunately, like the person above me said, it will be very expensive to double on oboe. Oboe is my main istrument, and chances are an instrument under 1000$ will be nearly unplayable. Sorry:cry:

The oboe that I got to meet similar requirements is the Buffet 4052. It needed to be tweaked from the factory, but it is made in Germany and has a plastic lining to the bore. Sounds great. I got a GREAT deal on it.

Ask MOJO about the Linton oboe he has for sale, tell him CARL H. sent you:twisted:

It's an oldie, a "now-defunct ring model" (according to them) made of wood sometime in the 1940s.

I took lessons on it with a pro a few years back and she pronounced it a fine horn. I played it in a community band and some of my friends said they were amazed at how in tune it was.

I can't vouch for the more recent Lintons, but this one seems to be pretty good. I got it at a church used instrument sale for $200.
