I used to be a Yamaha snob. Don't get me wrong, the customs are great horns, but I had no idea what Yanagisawa had to offer until this week. I went to a pretty big music store in my area. They have almost every brand of tenor saxophone that I am interested in. I had the intention of walking out of there with a Yamaha Custom Z, but to my surprise, I fell in love with the 991S. The sound, hands down, beat every sax I tried. I tried a few saxes that day, (Yanagisawa 991 991S 992, Keilwerth SX90, and the Yamaha Custom Z), and the new Yamaha was the worst one. I couldn't believe how focused the sound was compared to the Z. I am one of the converted.

congrats - i have a S991 too - ordered it blind from USAHORN and am delighted with the result - a really nice horn...

I thought about getting a nice Buescher twin for my tenor, but ultimately chickened out as i would not be able to test. I would like to try a good buescher some time, but am more than happy with my Yani :)

I'm surprised you guys found silver-plated T991's. I think I've only seen them overseas......silver-plated A991's also. I might've bought an A991S instead of my Keilwerth, but they charge a lot extra for the silver plate!

I bought my silver-plated Yani curved soprano at USAHORN's website. It was the only place I'd seen them....

Thanks. Would you happen to know the Saxfoonwinkle web address?

According to the Yani website the SC901 S is a special order horn-it's in very small print and they show no photograph

I have a silver plated S-880 and it has "gold" keywork. The inside of the bell is "gold" as well.

Current 901S and 991S series horns have silverplated (not gold lacquered) keywork, at least that applies to the one we have and to a few others I have seen.

Yes, Alto & tenor (901, 991) has silver plated with silver key + rod.
But I mean soprano - S901S, S-991S, S992S. These silver plated soprano need to be special but I don't know if key & rod is also silver.

I know the 991 are supposed to be great horns but I only have enough finances to stretch to a 901 in tenor. How do these compare to Yamaha pros or customs. I currently have a YAS62 but need a tenor.

The 901 stacks up favorably to the Yamaha 62II. I think the 875 series horns are more in line with the 991.

Thanks Morry. A T500 has just come up for sale in my local area. It was supposedly purchased new in 1984. I have seen a lot of posts re T800, 880s, T5s etc but have not heard of the T500. Is this a student horn or is it ok for a main horn?

I'm a big fan of Yanagisawa horns. I own a s991. Intonation, ergonomics etc are spot on. Loud and bright when I am using the Yanagisawa metal mouthpiece and Rico Plasticover. I've got only one major complaint about them - that the lacquering and finish is poor in comparison to Yamaha. I bought the horn brand new, and now there are areas where the lacquer is starting to come off. Compared to my Yamaha which I had for 8 years - still in pristine condition. I use both horns equally often, so the lacquer coming off on the Yanagisawa, i believe, is not due to misuse.
