wow

this old ebay alto sn 14xx A in excellent condition with the Leblanc system key work. the pads look iffy and the horn is dripping in oil. the case is excellent as well, warranty cardand manual/fingering chart, original neck strap (swanky gold flash), twenty five reeds most of them still sealed (at 5.00 a box of twelve) so ... early seventies? it is missing two or three corks, LH thumb rest (screw mount). there is one guard post that needs a re-solder, one post has been knocked slightly out of align ment but it is on a big rib so it is good for now but will need to be sorted out soon, a few tiny pings, very minor spotting in a 98 % lac ... hmmm, looking closely, the top of the vito logo, the oval that frames it really, suggests a relac. though the engraving for the most part seems clear, just on the wimpy or light side... original vito piece that looks interesting but has minute chips on the tip and a nice Vandoren maked A 101 (the 1's look a little odd but i think they are 1's)
i soaked up a vintage medium reed, and... a great sounding fun horn to play out of the box within a box ... am i a happy guy:) :D yep.

any one out there play one of these??? or used to play one, or cursed adjusting them.

considering how iffy the pads look, this thing rips.

i used to think i was a little nuts (i know i am now). the first saxophone i learned on may have been a Leblanc system horn and i never knew its uniqueness. it was by reputation, the second best alto in our school, so as soon as i got my hands on the mark VI i never touched it again. as i check this out, the alternate fingerings seemed awfully familiar. i was really a trombone student at the time i took up the sax. i came into school early and taught myself sax before class as the teacher frowned on doubling, i had to fess up when i asked to take the mark VI home for the summer. i had my own bone by that time so i asked for the selmer. he never forgave me for that move, but in the end i was more enthusiastic than his sax section so he let me sign it out ... i wonder... to this day it seems that the first thing i look for on a new horn are fingering peculiarities based on some vague recollection of well... was that really a model thirty five i started on :? if so, i have to ramp up my respect for the program for providing good instruments upon which to learn8-) .
but now for the best part, aside from the tone and how fun and weird it is to play the leblanc system, when i first revved the horn up, the low c wouldn't close. i gave it a close look and there, wedged in the back of the guard was an old LH palm pad, dried and cracked. i popped it out and then noticed an old adjustment or feature :? there, glued onto the :line0: low C's domed resonator is a small styrofoam nub . almost the size of my thumb tip about 7/8 " long. centered in the tonehole so that it projects into the bow when the key is closed and :? buffering? when the key is open, it is very light weight so it shouldn't affect the keys movement or speed noticably 8-), the key seems a bit more open than the E flat key but the tables line up perfectly, it looks as though this was :? made for this purpose or designed into the horn 8-) or is it a slick mod that i've never seen before :? the glue looks a bit sloppy but it could have been re-fastened at some point.

this little horn keeps on giving and it has only been here for a couple of hours. any ideas or comments will only augment my :D glee:D which is considerable at this moment.

I just bought one of these as well - though not a Model 35 (think I bid on yours as well, though...). Ebay, dirt cheap. Nearly the same model, alto, three bell keys in a row on the left side, but without the extra Leblanc stuff like the huge G# cluster. It's got the funny Beaugnier switch on the G# spatula. Very heavy, great action. Definitely a pro horn.

Mine's a relac, and it has to be said, very pretty. And it does rip, indeed it does. It has that deep, dark French sound, very easy to control. I can push it really hard or make it whisper, but in terms of projection it's a bit of a shocker - amazing. Not too good at the bottom end, but I suspect that's my m'piece (Selmer metal D from the '70s) or my chops, as I haven't played for about 8 years. As a comeback horn I couldn't have wished for better. I was sure I'd made a horrible mistake, but it arrived, I slapped on the mouthpiece, Mingus At Antibes on the turntable, and it just sung. Lucky or what?

Incidentally I just bought a vintage Anello HR 'piece on good old ebay, but if anyone has any other suggestions I'd be grateful. The Selmer on this Vito can sound nice but it can also loosen your fillings. I've always gone for the Dolphy sound.

Was either one of these being sold by quinntheeskimo? If so, I looked that one over very carefully and was amazed by the number screw adjustments and the extra palm key just above the left pinky cluster.

i saw the quinn-the-eskimo ratoinale

i am just getting into these old french horns. i believe that is a semi-rationale model or a "prototype" horn. the vito model 35 five has the same or similar fingerings but the frankenstien screws are not on the ends of each of the extra keywork arms, out of jargon here, but it seems as though most of the features are the same just much more streamlined and harder to see than on this one

Quinntheeskimo is still available here, i think

Leblanc-System-Alto-Saxophone-Rationale- ebay item number 7366063550

see also ebay item number 3778764093 for one that is about 200 sn#'s earlier than my vito ... nicer condition, no silver soldered bits on the keywork or

http://www.saxpics.com/the_gallery/Leblanc/Vito/2009a/ this one is the identical model to the one that arrived in the mail, save the finish on the lh pinkie cluster, that, BTW i really like ... i was worried about that to no avial

earlier last month i bid on a Vito kenosha that was described as a vito Leblanc system horn, with two mp's and some misc. sax supplies, the right side of this horn is almost identical to the leblanc system vito including the oval vito logo ... i bid a bit high because i wanted it and won the auction by a few pennies with a couple of pennies to spare ... we both had the same idea of what we would like to pay for it. a day or so after the auction closed some one emailed me, correctly pointing out that the horn i had won was incorrectly described and informing me i had purchased a different horn than i thought ...
i immediatly contacted the seller and we discussed the discrepency and decided to mutually dissolve the deal.

the next day i went online and there was the horn relisted!!! or so i thought, new pics ... i looked closely and went " d@#m it, that really was a vito thirtyfive!!! i should have trusted my instincts . have i been tricked? then i realised the thiryfive was from a different seller, identical case, similar accessories, reeds mp's etc.

freed from the bogus deal (thank you anonamous sax buff) i was able to bid on the horn i really wanted ... perfect timing, meanwhile i decided to get the other one as well, ok mp's etc. so i negotiated a new price for the first one and it should be here in a week or two, i think it is coming by ox-cart. that is fine, as long as it gets here. soon i will be able to A-B these two horns so

so i think have kenosha like the one you have outtolunch and i look forward to that to

i also got a vito noblet tenor ... arriving next week so i will start thinning out the stable a bit soon ... bring on the frenchies

Yeah, mine's a Kenosha. If I've got the story right, these were built by Beaugnier and shipped in pieces to Kenosha to be assembled, as a tax dodge. That might account for some funny and interesting quirks of the sax - for instance the bell brace is attached by screws, not soldered. Cornific, I'm betting you'll love the horn if it's like mine. Now I want a 35! There are also some later Vitos that look more like straight up Beaugniers with right-side bell keys, cool-looking Selmer-like keywork and nice engraving. This could become and obsession...

i do think you would appreciate the 35, i would like to get a hold of a tenor.
with the extra layer of key work and the lack of adjustment some of the keys seem spongy, like little accordians under each finger, even so it is fun and next to the LA sax, which my nieghbor described as smokier, it has a great tone, nieghbor preferred the 35's tone,

i had a stuck g#, playing away, the key sticks, i go to unstick it and ... it isn't there... i focus in on this and it turns out the g# key is in the back. i remeber reading that the leblanc system was based on a bohm system of some kind ... oh i laughed so hard at myself... i had noticed the key earlier but had not traced it ... in all my years of sticking g #'s, ...in the back!!! crazy

i can see why these system horns are setup nightmare but i think it will be worth the effort
