I got this e-mail the other day (yes, I got permission to post):
Hi Peter!
I have a little info you might like to hear.
I just picked up my SML two-tone Gold Medal 2. It was being overhauled here locally where I live in Copenhagen, Denmark. The horn is great now. My teacher and a collector, she also teaches were very impressed with the sound (my teacher playing, not me ;-) )
When I delivered the sax, and when I picked it up, I had conversations with my (very nice and friendly) repair man, $repair_man, who was very enthusiastic when I brought in with my horn.
He told me he actually had his training/education at SML. But I didn’t get around to ask which years.
He had all sorts of anecdotes and stories about SML. But we were just chatting informally, and I didn’t take notes of course. So I’m afraid I have can’t relay much to you. Also his accent sometimes made me unsure, what he was saying ;-)
He named many of the employees, including a big old guy from the island of Martinique, who was the one hammering and forming the sax bodies (pardon my lack of the real terms here). That guy stood all day hammering, and supposingly he was real committed and enthusiastic about his work.
... [Deleted at e-mailer's request] ...
$Repair_man told me that most of the original tools now belong to instrument maker:
$French_gent (with name and address)
These tools ofc. might be the instruments that you mention on you site that now are used to produce student horns. But might be another set? Anyway I thought this would be very interesting for you to know. It certainly interests me.
If you’d like I can try and make a regular interview with $repair_guy, but you can also try and get in touch with him at:
$email_address
(He is not the only guy working there, and is not always in)
Was thinking of posting this in SOTW for others to see, but I thought I could fill in more personal information just mailing you. Perhaps you can relay any information that would be interesting for others.
Thanks for a great site, and a great forum, that has helped me a lot! I’m just trying to pay some pack, although hard as a newbie player (not newbie jazz listener) J
Please don’t hesitate to mail me if there’s anything I can do for you.
$Repair_guy, I have been subsequently told, does speak and read English -- which is good, because I don't speak or write Danish. The French gentleman doesn't speak English, but I may impress upon Kim to have her write an introduction for me.
If he actually does own the mold for the Gold Medal, anyone wanna take up a collection?
