I can't find any info on this serial number for an F.E. Olds. I have searched the Internet and can't find any starting with a "0". Can anyone help me? A friend of mine handed me this sax to mess around on while I was saving up some money for my new one. The sax and the case are very old...haven't played it yet. Just wondering when this was made.

Yeah, placing that babies gonna be a tough one. I'd say pre 1950's for sure. Most of the info on the olds sax on the Internet is in this forum/folder.

The MusicTrader Olds Serial Number chart indicates 1965. I would tend to believe that number (even though Pierret and not Olds actually made the sax) as it tracks with the manufacture and marketing timeframe for that model. (My father bought a slightly used one for me in '67 - it was unofficially billed back then as a poor man's Selmer)

Hi, I have rescued sort of, a F.E. Olds & Son that reads The Parisian Ambassador MADE IN FRANCE EXCLUSIVELY FOR FE OLDS & SON. IT has a stencil i have not been able to id after hours on the web, but i have not gone to the library yet. The serial number I think, is in an odd place for these instruments, it is either a U50976 or an 050976. I think it was a school band instrument but it still may be a little older than I expected. Any ideas? Thanks, I'd love to find out when it was made, by whom, it's approx or possible value...
thanks, cg

My folks bought me a new Parisian Ambassdor alto in 1963 and the serial number was 38,9xx. I'd say the 1965 date given above is about right. The earlier Olds stencils were Martins with the soldered tone holes and left side bell keys. Then came the Parisian and Parisian Ambassador which I think is the same horn, just different years. So you will have some Martin serial numbers followed by the French manufacturer's (Perriet?) numbers.

Pierret made the Ambassador and Parisian Ambassadors, for the most part. I have been told that soundwise, it is along the lines of a Balanced Action. The neck is similar to the lower slung Mark VI style, and has the more French vibe. I like the tone, keywork not as good as the Buescher 400 I had. Has a responsive low end. It really does sound good.

Actually - I believe Pierret made the Ambassador, and Leblanc made the Parisian Ambassador. I thought I read that on Pete's (Saxpics site) some time ago, but can no longer find it there.

A check of the pictures still there indicates this may be so.

The Classic Olds Ambassador was made by Martin. The Olds Parisian Ambassador was made by Pierret.
