Any sax players here from Phoenix?

Hey, howabout those quick-dryin' reeds?
Yes, I'm a tenor-player here in Phoenix. I play and compose for/with Subterranean Jazz. I'm 50 now but didn't really start playing til almost 40, so I think of myself as a "beginner" (and probably always will!).
I like Sonny Rollins, early Lester Young, Gene Ammons, Pharoah Sanders, Trane, Mobley, Wardell Gray...mostly and bits of everyone and everything.
Yourself?
We just played a gig outside of Kanab, Utah - a 6+hr drive to and fro Phoenix. Drove up in the morning and back after the gig!I suppose there's a paucity of Utah jazz outfits...

you ever go to the Pita Jungle on Thursday nights? They have blues jams where you can play and stuff.

I've heard of the Pita Jungle having some jazz but I didn't know about the open blues jam situation. Sounds like a great opportunity. We have a regular gig at a winebar on Thurs. so i normally wouldn't be able to make it.
If you're into blues, Warsaw Wally's in Phoenix also has an open jam night and i know that sax-players have often come down.
The band I play in is pretty devoted to playing our original tunes so the only time we play (as a band) "out of the book" is at weddings and private gigs where people are looking for standards.
I miss just wailing away in a freer situation sometimes - it seems as we get older, time and opportunity are a non-stop juggling act!
