Tenorsaxer: I visited Phoenix a couple of months ago as a featured guest of the Arizona Traditional Jazz Society. Our main event was a Sunday afternoon at their monthly jam-session meeting at one of the hotels in, I believe, Scottsdale.

On Saturday afternoon, we had a Dixieland combo at Razzleberries. Nice place with really alive acoustics. It was NOT a jam session, but still, a very good Dixieland-style band. If you would like some contact info for these events, please e-mail me at jazzdolsonatattbi.com. DAVE

Tenorsaxer, I'm leaving Phoenix this week, after a 7 year stay. The places you mention are best for open jazz jams. Email me offline, and I'll give you some more info about people you should meet. Some of them aren't on the internet, and I don't want to post phone #s in a public forum.

Tenorsaxer,

I live in the Phoenix area - in the East Valley, in the southernmost bits of the city of Chandler. My background is mostly classical and light, non-improvisational jazz.

I have played alto for 24 years (yikes!), soprano for about 4 years, I'm slowly nearing the end of my restoration of a C-melody sax, and I have a new tenor on order.

I am finishing an MBA program in November, and would DESPERATELY like to find a sax quartet or something to play in, after my classes end. In fact, I really think it would be cool to work toward putting together a "saxophone orchestra" made up of players from the Phoenix area. That's more of a long-term dream, though. "Saxpics", one of our moderators on this forum, is also a Phoenix dude, and may have some very good recommendations for you.

Email me at stacey_bowling@yahoo.com if you want to continue this discussion outside the forum.

I'm in Mesa, but I'm mostly a "retired" player, now -- I don't even have a bari right now (direct quote from wife -- an alto player: "I will not let you have that thing in my house. It's not an instrument, it's a piece of plumbing").

I wouldn't mind going someplace to hear some of our Phoenix contingent, though :).

I live in the Phoenix area. I returned to saxophone playing two years ago after a forty year hiatus. (It is amazing how much I remembered.) (The fingers didn't respond very well, and the chops were practically non-existant, but I remembered a lot.) Anyhow, I would love to get together with other Phoenix area players to...play?...talk/tell lies...go out and listen to others play...etc. If anything is put together, please e-mail me at davestevens1@cox.net.
Thanks,
Dave
