Has anyone heard of the saxophone brand named Voss? I was given a saxophone of this brand a few years ago--horrible horn, but it was probably made in the 50's I think. Had close relation in style and design to the Conns of that same era. Maybe they just slapped a different name on it. I then sold it on ebay, so I don't know where it is now.

"Voss" is one of a number of saxophones built by Dorfler & Jurka (supply your own umlauts :) ), a German company that bought saxophone bodies from Julius Keilwerth, but affixed their own keywork. They were eventually purchased by the Keilwerth company.

For a picture of one of these horns, take a peek at www.saxpics.com/the_gallery/Keilwerth/misc/voss_9199_sq

Yep:), that's it! Thanks for the info--it was exactly like I remember. Did you see that gaurd in back? The Voss is built like a tank.

I have an old Voss alto. All the pads (no resonators) are getting dry and hard but even so, I think it is going to be a great player after a repad. It has a very clear, bright voice, with resonators and a metal mouthpiece it should really cut through.

I just bought a Voss alto which is clearly a stencil of an Orsi Italian Alto (easily recognizable by the typical bell brace), so they must have bought from many different factories
