View Full Version : Where should I clip my tuner clip?

I have a Peterson VS-1 strobotuner and the builtin mic isn't nearly as accurate as a separate clip-on pickup. However, I'm having trouble finding a good place to clip onto the horn to get all the notes. If I put it on the neck, I have to put it on 2-3 different places to get readings on all the notes. Putting it on the bell is useless. There isn't much of anyplace on the body to put it where it doesn't interfere with keys.
So, what's a good place to get accurate readings on all notes and not get in the way?
Thanks.

I've got an old Peterson 400 and it has a jack for a mic and came with a astatic mic I assume was originally sold with it. It's a condensor to be sure and it seems to work well just hapharzardly pointing it downward from the from of the tuner, which is at eye level. If you're using a clip I think you have the same inherent problem in clip mics, they are great for live but you should get better results from a quality mic on a stand and good mic placement. How do you interpret accurate, or are you referring to sensitivity?
I don't know about those digital ones, I'm sure they are good. The old fashioned mechanical one doesn't seem too picky, I can sing a sustained note two feet away from the mic and get a goot reading and I get good results on bass, guitar, and all winds I tried without much fuss at all. Checking the results of a tuning on any of these against a digital synthesizer and it seems dead on.
Try a condensor mic on a stand if you have that as an option. Or one of those cheap mics for minidisc recorders. What kind of mic jack is on that thing?

I don't really want to bog down in details on why the builtin mic or external mics don't work well in noisy environments. Just start with the assumption that I want to use a contact mic because external mics aren't a useful option.
Where is a useful/reliable place to get a signal for a contact mic on a sax?

Bump.
Still hoping for a good suggestion on placement for a contact pickup I can plug into my tuner for tuning in noisy environments.
