I happened to catch the tail end of a cartoon on Turner Classic Movies yesterday that had a quick but effective shot of bass sax (I assume - or could it even have been contrabass?) in it. What a terrific sound and a terrific application for it. Anyone know of anyone who's done any investigation of the use of sub-bari saxophones in classic cartoons, like how much it was used, who played the parts, and so on?

And of course there's that terrific little bass sax tag on the Three Stooges theme song.

actually, old cartoon players back in the day used to be so good. Not only at playing there parts, but also as jazz musicians.

I think it was the fact that most of th ones that played those jobs grew up in an eviroment wher they were origionally classically trained on their instrument (before jazz became a popular music), and also picking up others. They seemed to be much more versitile in those days.
