After much reading and reviews of different entry level basses I finally bought one :D. It should be here next Wed. I'm excited. I got a chance to go to a local guitar center and just play around on some basses, not knowing what I was doing of course, but having a good time nonetheless. I don't want to spend too much money on an amp, but I need something that will be sufficient for practicing and also a good beginner book. ANy recommendations? I don't plan on taking lessons at all, just want to teach myself.

Oh yea, I bought a Brice HXB405 fretless 5 string. I went with a fretless because I heard the sound of a few and love it. I read a few posts on Talkbass.com and they were saying it may be more difficult starting off, but it you will gain more quicker. http://www.rondomusic.net/photos/bass/hxb405flnatb2aleft.jpg
Mine is right handed.

That's a nice-looking axe you've got. I love fretless 5-string, too. Back when I was playing bass these were rare, but now they're much easier to find at a good price. I was playing in a quartet with Hammond M3 organ, guitar, drums, and sax/bass. I'd play bass on some of the tunes for a change of pace. Check out Carol Kaye's books, etc. for good place to start:

jvsax,
That web site on Carol Kaye is really interesting. I never knew she did so many of the bass lines in the 60's and 70's music that I really dug. She is quite an interesting person. Thanks for referring to her site.8-)

There's a lot of debate in the bass community about if Kaye really did most of those parts. The general thought is that James jamerson did them. He's amazing and he's on most of the great Motown stuff.

Just an update...
Here are a few pics of my bass.... :D

Here are 2 clips, the first is my very first time playing it. I thought I would record it for future reference, hehe...

The second is the reason I initially got interested in the bass. I want to be able to walk some bass lines or create some nice bluesy bass lines to quote poetry over (spoken word).

I have just been playing around by ear, I need to get into my book so I can learn what I'm playing.

Where does the mouthpiece go?

I picked up a $50 bass from a scratch and dent sale along with a PigNose amp that can be used outside with batteries if necessary. My goal was to get closer to the beat of songs.

So for a couple of years I'd try to find the bass lines to some jazz songs on weekends. I don't know if it really helped but it was and is indeed an enjoyable exercise.

Oh and I decoraded the cheap bass thusly (http://groups.msn.com/GandalfesSaxCorner/otherinstruments.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=255). 8-)

Thats funny Gandalfe

Sharp looking Base JB. Hope you continue to enjoy it. I hope your string selection takes less time than our typical mouthpiece process;)

How many people missed the "Misc. Instruments" tag, clicked this thread, and were disappointed it wasn't a bass saxophone?

Meeeee....:(

Add me to that list too.

Joel, you must have one heck of an instrument budget this year!!

Congrats, cleger. I just got my first bass (see: the first I actually own) the other day, a 92 Ibanez EX 4string. I dig the fretless thing too but man can that be a pain sometimes. I'll post some pics if I can get around to it.

Wow (I thought) I haven't seen one bass sax in any store other than Saxquest, and he found "some basses" in a guitar center!

I'm back to reality now.

The debate (ultimately little to debate) centres on the fact that Jamerson has been wrongly credited for much of Kaye's work. It's not as if Jamerson is short on legitimate credits.
