This is probably what I'll end up with. I have a hurt back and haven't been able to practice for a couple of weeks but when I get better I think this'll work well. It has the soft core plus lots of edge when pushed. Its a New York 8 Link (new) that I've put some 20 baffles into with Plumbers putty. This is a very thin baffle that goes from just after the break down the piece from the tip about 5/8ths of an inch down the chamber. Not pretty but cheap. (NY link was about 120 and the putty 2 dollars.) K

Good tone Keith. I like it much better than your old Rovner MPC.

Sounds good Keith. Sorry to hear about your back!!!!
I too picked up a Link 7* off SOTW that plays better than I would have thought. I ended up with a small roll-over baffle which gave enough edge on my Couf. I have a jazz gig on the 23rd of this month and I'll probably use the Link for at least one set.

Yah baby. Sounds SO good I'm heading to SaxAlley this weekend to take a ride on a couple P Mauriats myself.
It'll take a bit of "doin' " to get me to switch from my Ref 54 (can't afford both), but I'm so happy with my MPC that I thought I'd try matching a horn to it for the last little "zeroing in" on the sound I want.
I did hedge my bet by buying a Tenny 7* STM....just in case the Ref/STM combo "does it" for me, but I'm still lookin forward to tryin the PM's.
Good luck w/ the back.
That plumbers putty might be cheap, but it sure tastes good, don't it? ;)

If you play the 66R tenor, I'm betting that you'll switch from the 54. The sound is very similar, it has a better low end, and you can put at least $1500 back into your pocket.

66R. K, I'll keep that in mind.
I'm especially interested in the Nickel Silver w/ Gold keys one (don't know the model) because I played a Silver/Gold Yani a few months ago that I liked. I didn't spend much time with it because $7k for a sax is just outa my league. But it looked nice, felt good, and sounded darker than my Ref.
I realize PM and Yani are apples and oranges, but now I'm curious. And Keith does sound great on his. 8-)

Dave. I was doing Pilates before the injury and still do alot of mat work. I'm getting better slowly but surely. Tom, the Link that is working so well for me is a baffled new New York Link. It has a darker core to the tone than any "plain" link I've played and just needs the baffle for enough punch to do RnB if needed. As you can tell also I have to be careful of squeeks because the baffle isn't "pro" but I can alter the air and get that together. I'm playing with the tenor sitting on a stool and that seems to work for me??Hands feel better also because I'm not supporting any weight?? Anyway, this thing is lingering and I hope to be back to work soon. this "light duty is a pain"/ Boring and too much sitting which is worse for me?? Oh, Jaz. You don't taste the putty, Its INSIDE the mouthpiece, good luck with a P. TIm sets them up well (nobody here comes close) and play my old The Martin while your there. You might end up with a killer horn for 1200?? K

Hey Kride. Hope your back heals up completely...and I doubt you'll do this, as I think I'm the only sax player in the world who is, but here's a suggestion if the back problem is really chronic. Play standing with the sax on a stand (no strap at all). I use a K&M bari stand, with the bottom section turned up to fit a tenor, it's very adjustable. It looks strange, but playing is unchanged and I've played rehearsals, gigs, workshops, jam sessions, whatever with the stand over 3 years now. Only things are: 1. You can't play seated. 2. You can't dance/sway/strut around on stage while you play. 3. You have to explain it to everyone.
I guess #2 might be a problem for you and your blues/R&B work, but anyway as a last resort, there it is.
By the way great sound on the set-up.

Keith,
Really digging the sound you are getting with the new setup. Is it possible to get you to take a picture of the baffle you ended up with? I'm curious... I'm back into baffle-experimentation mode, and I've got a new-to-me STM 8* on its way that will be the subject of my creativity.... although I'm really digging on the V16 T75 I had opened up / refaced by Norbert Satchel recently. It's pretty much perfect for me (and I'm not going to touch it), but I just can't help but experiment on other pieces... just in case...

Docax, you hit a nail on the head. I'm now playing with the horn sitting on the stool I used to sit on. You're right, I can't swing the horn and look like an idiot but so what. The biggest change that I hear/see is that I'm voicing different. If I don't bite and use the crappy emb that I've used in the past, I can pull a fat core and more overtones out of the horn. I heard our band last night at a benefit last night and they had a killer alto player subbing for me. In all honesty she sounded great and I am just not "having" to jump back in? Also, since I can't play lots now I'm taking "gonz" s advise and really thinking about what I want to hear and if I can play something "new". I'm so tired of forcing myself to go over the same ground for the last few years. Pete, I'll send you a pic of the inside of the baffle. I really don' tknow what I'm doing and if it works its more of an accident than anything else. K

The problem that I have with pieces in general and horns to some degree is finding the middle ground where I have a good core to the tone but some bite left to project? I've gone bright before with Ponzol M2, Guardala King, Super king, and then tryed to darken with my emb and horn but this is on the dark side and I'm trying to find the core and keep some Projection. Like I said hard to find the middle ground of what might work. Heres today (sunday 1016) with a little Richard Elliot so you can hear the recording quality I'm working with here at home and then a little copying usind three dif ligs. I think I like the middle one the best, Rovner dark and the Van 2 reed. K
