Thanks for getting some info up nice and early this year. I'm hoping to make it there for the third straight year. Especially good to see that Bruce Johnstone is gonna be featured. (On bari, I hope!)

Sounds like a good excuse to get out of the house (and take a break from baby-duty). I hope to make it this year and play some quartet music in the hotel room with you guys again!!

Assuming nothing comes up I'll be there this year too. Hooyah!
I worked with Bruce last Saturday with Ann Hampton Callaway - he's as strong as ever, even on a borrowed (Jim Germann) low A VI. I asked where his Bb was - he said Jim was working it over and something about feeling like he'd just sent his kid to summer camp. I can't schedule the symposium though - I must attend "new judge" school that week. Enjoy.

Very cool - any chance on when we'll know who will be giving masterclasses and/or recitals??

I missed it last year, but thoroughly enjoyed myself at the one two years ago. This is really a one of a kind event. A must for saxophonists who can make the trip. I'm fortunate enough to get a significant discount at a nearby upscale hotel. They've got a piano in their hotel/lobby bar and two years ago they let us have at it. After the bar closed, we opened our own, and kept playing well into the morning.

I'll be there. I'm always there. Grumps, your hotel sounds like the place. Whom do I have to know to get a discount? Will you do?

I won't know what I can get until it gets a bit closer in time to the event, depending upon room availability. Two years ago, there were plenty of rooms that time of year; just after the holidays. Hoping it's that way again, then I'll see what I can do.

Does anyone know if you have to reserve a spot? I've never been before... Really hope I can go! My college jazz band tours the next week and I'm not sure yet when we are meeting up. So it will depend on that if I can go...
Does anyone know if you have to reserve a spot?
Thanks,

Nope. Just show up and wonder around. Huge place.
If you get the opportunity, get a close look at Bruce's "psychedelic pad job" recently installed on his VI. That bari almost plays itself now!

I'll go if I'm able to take a break from "baby doodie." :joker:

Anyone know if there will be any technicians with a booth or something set up?

This year is the first I'll be able to attend. I have a few questions...although they may seem silly.
1. Does everyone bring a horn with them? Do most people bring them or do most come without?
2. How do you guys usually dress? Casual/everyday clothes or a little on the dressy side?
3. One last reassurance: it’s FREE and you do NOT reserve a spot
Thanks,
Grumps

1) Most people bring horns; to either take part in clinics, or perhaps meet up with folks they know to play elsewhere.
2) It's very casual, but some folks might want to dress up for the concerts at night, but that's strictly optional.
3) Just show up.

I'll be there too. MusicMedic.com will have a booth and some things to show. I'll try and bring some Gloger necks if anyone is interested in trying one.
Are we planning a dinner this year?

Of course! Vegan BBQ for all!
:)
I'm still trying to rope someone into coming with me to split the driving and expenses. It's possible that my reputation for snoring has gotten around.

I will be attending the Symposium as well, after Merlin suggested it to me :) However, I too have some questions:
Are there opportunities to sign up for masterclass situations?
The community ensemble I read about on the website, can anyone participate? What kind of music do they generally play?
What are some of the favored hotels in the area?
Thanks! I appreciate it, I'm really excited! As a tenor player, I can't wait to hear James Houlik's recital. I'm also very eager to meet more people in the saxophone community! :D :D :D

That's great Amy! It'll be cool to see you again.
I've stayed at a couple of different hotels round there. I'm open to suggestions if anyone knows of one with a really great rate that's close.

Cool guys it looks like we have a good crowd showing up! And, all good people. I'm looking forward to it.
I got a room at the Best Western in Fairfax for $69.00. Merlin, I would offer for you to stay in the room with me but I already have a roommate. You met Bryant from last years symposium. He will be coming from MD. I'm not going comment on the snoring. My Therapist recommends that I not discuss it. In fact, I may need to get a restraining order. :)
Seriously, your snoring wasn't that bad, the nightmares that I was having about it have almost completely ceased.

Hey all. I've just made my plans and my dad will be coming again as well.
Anybody staying at the Comfort Inn? That's where we'll be. 3 miles from GMU, rate mid $60s.
I'll have my Buescher curvy along as usual.

Maybe I will find a killer deal on a 82Z alto!

We should designate a meeting place for Friday evening and Saturday. This year there are recitals going on before the Navy Band concert so maybe dinner is out of the question? I know I'm not missing Houlik's recital.
For starters, how about we meet during that hour between 7PM and 8PM in the main lobby of the Center for the Arts building Friday evening?

If anyone cares – I'll be wearing a red tie with a big gold sax on it.

Paul, I'll have to find some trousers that will match that tie. I'm glad to see that we are coordinating our appearance this year. :)

Turns out I'm going to have to take a pass on the symposium this year. Too much stuff going on at work.
However, I may be going to the NAMM show this month - Curt, are you going to be there?

Aww it's too bad Merlin!:(
I'm sure we'll have another run in, though :)
I got a hotel yesterday at the Courtyard by Mariott for about $76 a night, I guess that's what I get for waiting until the last minute...
I just wanted to drop a line saying how excited I am to go, hopefully I'll meet some cool new people!

I'm kind of dissapointed because I can't make the Friday night stuff. But I am excited about the classes and recitals on Saturday. Especially the Kenneth Tse and Vincent David masterclasses. I am still trying to figure out what else I should go to. I definitely want to hear Lulloff. Any suggestions?

Merlin I can't believe your not going. Terrible man, terrible. I guess it will allow us SOTW'ers a chance to dish out some dirt about the Merlin. I'll make up some lies about you and get some rumors started.
I'll be at NAMM this year. I will holding down a booth with the good people at Precision Pad. Stop by my booth while you're there!

I could not make the Friday night event, but have to say, attending for the first time (all day on Saturday), anyone that has even a remote interest on blowing air through this pipe we call a saxophone, I am about shocked they would hesitate in attending. To sit in on free classes, with Miles Osland, hear Jamey Aebersold give his experiences/suggestions, Vincent David, Dr. Ken Tse, Bruce Johnstone, all talk and toot, was really a neat experience. Then to wander over (to the vendor room) in between classes/recitals and mess around with new Keilwerths, new Selmers, was also fun. I could easily picture myself in a weak moment coming home with a new tenor......(I guess she'd make me sleep next to it after that).
What is NAMM? and where/when is it?
Also, I never saw anything about "an event" at Loyola this year or did I already miss it? There are some old posts for one that occurred....Jan/Feb of CY-05.
