Maybe key clamps are a different general topic, but mine are for a keilwerth.
A second-hand SX90 bari.

Key clamps are completely new to me, I can see two possible functions:
1) keep the heavy parts from flopping around during shipping or rough transport
2) keep a good tone-hole impression on the pads

What's the intent: only use them when it will be bounced around by UPS or in my trunk? use them when it will be unused for a few days? put them in whenever it's not being played ...?

How firmly should they be in there?

Are key clamps as controversial as leave-in swabs?

They are probably more controversial. I like them. Adjust them so they are they close the pads with a force similar to you finger pressure. It will be different since they often press near the center of the keys instead of the key pearls.

For bari, I really like them since the bell keys tend to be the first to get leaks when in being jostled in transport.....however, if your JK has the factory pads still installed, then you may make the notorious sticky JK pad problem a bit worse.
My SX90 bari HAD the original until I had them removed....now the sticking doesn't occur when using the key clamps.

BTW, Mojo, ever check out Big John's pizza in Bridgeton? I'd die for one of his pies!

Sorry no. We have sooo many good ones here.

I'll trade ya for some nice places in Fujisawa, Otsu and Kyoto.

I guess the grass is always greener, huh?
No kidding though about Big Johns....when you over that way, drop in and give it a try. You'll be REAL glad you did.
This guy flies pies all over the US by FedEx- that's how good they are.

BTW, Mojo, are you playing a JK bari too?
I am in the process of selling my SX90 black low A to make way for a VERY special SX90 low A bari....know anyone interested in a monster?

Randall, what's different about the SX90 you're getting? Have you set a price for your current bari yet?

zgatt,
Hope that bari's working well for you. I used clamps only when I was transporting and only when the horn was dry. When it's just sitting around the studio here at home in the case it was unclamped. I can't prove it but I have the sneaky suspicion that it cuts down on adjustments.

The clamp issue is almost as controversial as which horn is best.
