What do you think of garage band?

So mac has garage band that lets you write music using loops - what do you think that this is doing to the level of music knowledge composition once required? Do you think that dumbing it down to that level can make anyone a composer? Do you think that someone can become successful writing music using garage band?

No, it's a tool, give someone a hammer and they may be able to drive some nails, but they are not a carpenter.

Sure, if they have talent.

I write music for television commercials, and Garageband is more powerful than most people think. I use it. However, I don't use ANY of the loops (that's not composing, that's drag and drop), I use it for it's mixing and editing capablilities. As a PS I would like to add that I use Garage band to accompany much more powerful composing tools.

Haha - I wasn't planning on doing that - but that is really funny to see in words.

I use it to show my MS Student how much of the music they listen to - particularly Hip Hop is basic loops and simple processing. I allow them to play with the loops and see what they can come up with in a short session.

Personally - At our level it's more like word processing them music. "Drag and Drop" as one person mentioned. Although it is pretty COOL. And then kids can import the piece into i-Tunes and burn a CD or send it to someone. All of a sudden the Band-Guy (which is me) becomes more than just the scales-and-lesson-book guy. (which can also be cool but certainly not INSTANT)

It might just be me - but I see Garage Band as a sort of game. I don't know if I take the program that seriously and consider it more of a toy than a tool.

Although, I can see it as being useful and a great tool. It's just not what I use it for at this point. I'm more of a pro tools and m-box person.
